Don Cherry dekes, dangles and sprints past spears on Coach’s Corner

The CBC's Don Cherry had a very selective memory on Saturday evening. He lamented Brandon Dubinsky's ability to attack Sidney Crosby at will in Game 1 of the Penguins-Blue Jackets series, he mocked Duncan Keith for jabbing at the Blues' stars--suggesting that Keith "got Seabrook pumped up" (before sidestepping that topic)--he reviewed the Blues' game-winning goal against Chicago, lamenting Patrick Kane not blocking a shot, he very briefly praised Pavel Datsyuk's game-winner and suggested that the Wings are the worst team for the Bruins to play as their lack of retaliation prevents the Bruins from playing their game (no Loosick mention on Saturday), and then he praised Corey Perry scoring against Dallas and Ryan Getzlaf's persistence (no spear there, either).

Seabrook Plans To Play Tonight

from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,

Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook will be in the lineup when the team faces the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at CONSOL Energy Center.

Seabrook was injured during Sunday night’s 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames when he was hit illegally from behind by Rene Bourque and crashed face-first into the boards. After a few moments on the ice, Seabrook slowly made his way to the bench and dressing room and did not return.

“I’m feeling good,” Seabrook said Tuesday following the Hawks’ morning skate. “I remember the whole thing. I got hit and heard Bourque say right away he was sorry. I could hear Duncan (Keith) and (Jonathan) Toews behind me. I couldn’t get up so I put my head down and everybody seemed to think I was knocked out. I felt like I held my weight pretty good.”

Seabrook said the move to remove him from Sunday’s game after the hit was precautionary, especially with the knowledge the veteran has missed time on three occasions with concussions during his career.

Seabrook Returns Tonight

from Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune,

Brent Seabrook will return to the Chicago Blackhawks’ lineup in Game 6 as they try to even their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinals series against the Vancouver Canucks.

The defenseman, who suffered a concussion during Game 3 when he was hit hard by the Canucks’ Raffi Torres, passed NHL protocol testing Sunday and will play in Game 6 at the United Center.

“He’s an important part of our team,” coach Joel Quenneville said. ““His makeup and his leadership qualities are a big part of our team. “Even though he wasn’t playing, you could feel his presence around the locker room and the guys. They competed for him in ways that was nice to see. The fact he gets to play again is going to help us out in a lot of ways. He assumes a lot of quality ice time in all situations. He gives us some size and some presence back there and has a big shot offensively, so it’s nice to have him back.”

Special Hitting Zone

Maybe the league can have some red, blinking neon lights below the ice surface that let’s us know, free shots available here.

from Damien Cox of The Spin,

Now, the Torres/hitting zone ruling might come as a bit of a surprise to Jarret Stoll given that he was given a one-game suspension last week for hitting San Jose’s Ian White into the glass behind the net. So the “hitting zone” - “separate head from body zone?” - area apparently doesn’t extend all the way from the goal line to the glass, but just to some ill-defined area immediately behind the net.

Having been now to three of four GMs meetings and NHL board of governors meetings at which head shots and concussions were extensively discussed, I can assure you I’ve never, EVER heard of any special rules for hits behind the net. Several NHL managers were mystified about this concept when contacted.

Early Morning Line

My prediction, based on the DVD from March 2010 and “hitting area” rationale, is I don’t believe he’ll be suspended.

My opinion, based on Torres’ penchant for hitting people in head, is he probably should be suspended.

But I will be surprised if is.

Blackhawks Trying To Extend Seabrook

from Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times,

Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman made it clear again. He’s looking to add a penalty-killing defenseman to the Hawks mix—and he’s not trading Brent Seabrook.

“We’re trying to sign Seabrook and we’ve been trying to sign him for a while,” Bowman said Friday before the Hawks faced the Dallas Stars. “It’s going along amicably. We haven’t gotten it done yet, but we’ve had different ideas back and forth.”

Bowman maintained that Seabrook, who is in the last year of his second contract with the Hawks, will be part of the Hawks past the Feb. 28 trade deadline.

Blackhawks Hope To Extend Seabrook

from Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times, Defenseman

Brent Seabrook is in the final year of his second contract with the Blackhawks. So it’s time for the Hawks to start looking at keeping him around.

Seabrook is considered part of the Hawks’ young core, and is definitely in line for a raise from his current $3.5 million salary.

“Now that we’ve gotten through the summer with the changes we had to make, we’re going to start to look at that,” Hawks GM Stan Bowman said Friday about Seabrook’s contract status. “You’re always trying to look ahead.

Wisniewski Hit On Seabrook Tonight

via Tim Sassone of Between The Circles,

What a cheap shot by Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski on Brent Seabrook in the second period on Wednesday night.

A high-stick/elbow/charge to Seabrook’s face, and all he got was a minor penalty for charging. Gutless no-call by referees Paul Devorski and Ian Walsh.

Wisniewski’s head shot knocked Seabrook out and he retired to the dressing room. The Hawks later announced that Seabrook wouldn’t be returning to the game.
