Witt A Candidate For A Buy-Out

via Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank,

Garth Snow said last season they would not put Brendan Witt on waivers to make him available at half-price to teams. But even at $1.5 million, based on the market this summer for depth players, it’s unlikely a team would have taken the veteran defenseman’s tab. He was placed today on unconditional waivers.

A buyout is probably in his future. The Islanders still carry seven defensemen on one-way contracts for the 2010-11 season. If they buy out this last season of his contract, the Islanders could add the cost as they reach the salary cap floor.

Witt May Be A Marked Man Tonight

from Greg Logan of On the Islanders Beat,

As fate would have it, Brendan Witt’s comeback from a five-game suspension for a blow to the head of Maple Leafs forward Niklas Hagman will be in Toronto tonight at Air Canada Centre. Although the shot Witt delivered was unintentional because he had no stick and simply was trying to get his body in Hagman’s way, the Islanders defenseman understands if Toronto fans or the Leafs themselves demand retribution.

Asked if he might be a marked man tonight, Witt said, ” don’t know. I played with Ron [Wilson, the Toronto coach]. He coached me in Washington. He’s not that type of guy. But if it is, we’ll just address it. If I’ve got to fight, I’ve got to fight, and then, it’s forgotten about. It’s a part of the game.

Islanders Defensive Style Is Risky

from Greg Logan of Newsday,

(Scott) Gordon’s system is based on an aggressive forecheck that encourages the defense to pinch in an effort to keep the puck in the offensive zone. But sometimes, as happened Saturday in Columbus, the opposing team gains control of the puck and throws it up the ice, sending their forwards off to the races while the Isles scramble to backcheck.

“Personally, I think it’s more of a risky type of game,” (Brendan) Witt said. “There’s a lot of odd-man rushes. But that’s the way he wants us to play, and until he decides he wants to change that, we’re going to play that way.”

Islanders Surprise Witt With Contract Offer

from On the Islanders Beat at Newsday,

(Brendan) Witt wondered, too, which is why the decision by general manager Garth Snow and owner Charles Wang to give him a two-year extension worth $6 million that will keep him on Long Island through the 2010-11 season is so meaningful. “I was surprised when they told me,” Witt said last night from his summer home in Florida. “I was like, ‘Wow.’ Most teams, the way they operate is they don’t make that decision until Christmas when they realize which direction the team is going, and they ask what you can get for them.

“Snowy has always complimented me on the way I play, the ‘warrior-type mentality.’ I appreciate that, and I appreciate Charles agreeing to do it, too. That shows a lot of loyalty, which you do not find in major league sports too often….

Witt Out With Ankle Injury

from Newsday,

“It’s tough to lose Witt,” Nolan said after the win in Calgary. Comparing the rugged defender to goaltender Rick DiPietro, Nolan added, “He’s similar to Ricky in how valuable he is to us. But the stars were lined up and we had seven defensemen dressed, which was luck on our part. Freddy Meyer did a great job.

“But it was a tough loss for Witt, and we’ll cross our fingers and hope the MRI comes back not as serious as it seems to be. It’s an ankle sprain right now, and we’ll check and see what the severity of it is.”
