Brayden Point Still Unsigned But No Panic In Tampa
by Paul on 07/26/19 at 08:29 AM ET

from Diana C. Nearhos of the Tampa Bay Times,
Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois has not shared any details of his meetings with Point’s agent Gerry Johannson, other than their beverage choices (tea for the GM, coffee for Johannson). But he has consistently called them productive conversations.
Reportedly, Montreal inquired about submitting an offer sheet to Point before signing Carolina’s Sebastian Aho instead, another Johannson client. If Point or his agent indicated he wouldn’t sign an offer sheet, it means he wants to stay here.
So what’s the issue? In short, the delay is because contract negotiations are tricky.
The Lightning doesn’t have much cap space. It has $5.6 million available, per CapFriendly, but can exceed the cap up to $5.8 million if Ryan Callahan is placed on long-term injured reserve. Right now, that’s the likely scenario. So, Tampa Bay can spend up to $11.4 million.
The next question revolves around the length of the deal. Point is five years from unrestricted free agency, thus making that the ideal term. Unrestricted free agency works out in players’ favors (see: Artemi Panarin’s $81.5 million deal with the Rangers).

The Latest On Brayden Point’s Contract Situation In Tampa
by Paul on 06/29/19 at 04:05 PM ET

from Corey Long at NHL.com,
Brayden Point and the Tampa Bay Lightning have been in contact regarding a new contract, and general manager Julien BriseBois is confident that a deal will get done some time this offseason.
The 23-year-old forward can become a restricted free agent July 1.
"I met with Brayden Point's agent in Vancouver," BriseBois said. "As much as I'd like to get this done soon, and I'm sure they'd like to get this done soon, there's a process to these things and there's kind of a rhythm to the offseason. Teams eventually get eliminated, they do their postmortem, they do their amateur meetings, their pro meetings, combine, draft, now it's the window for free agents."

Brayden Point Is A Real Bargain
by Paul on 01/23/19 at 02:26 PM ET

from Nick Kelly of the Tampa Bay Times,
One of these things is not like the others.
Take a look at the NHL’s top goal scorers and their annual average salary, according to capfriendly.com. One of these contracts doesn’t belong:
Alex Ovechkin ($10 million)
Brayden Point ($919,167)
John Tavares ($11 million)
Jeff Skinner ($5.725 million)
Johnny Gaudreau ($6,75 million)
Connor McDavid ($12.5 million)
Patrick Kane ($10.5 million)
Gabriel Landeskog ($5.57 million)
Can you tell which contract is not like the others by the time ... Okay, you get the point.
If you haven’t figured it out by now, there’s your answer — Point. His contract is missing the word million. That’s not a typo. Point, 22, doesn’t make that much. He is still playing on his entry-level contract.
It makes him, one of the NHL’s best scorers, also one of its best bargains.
