Video- Brad Marchand Being Brad Marchand
by Paul on 02/26/20 at 05:07 AM ET

from Eric Francis of Sportsnet,
The gesture? Predictable.
The timing? Ridiculous.
If you think David Rittich’s stick flip provided unnecessary ammunition for the Edmonton Oilers last month, consider what Brad Marchand did to fire up the Flames Tuesday night.
Midway through a tight contest that saw the Flames leading 1-0, Marchand converted a shorthanded breakaway to send the crowd at TD Garden into a frenzy.
Instead of proceeding to the Bruins’ bench, the Bruins veteran immediately skated towards Mikael Backlund to deliver a stare down and a few choice words.
It was akin to a post-homer bat flip, showing up the opposition when they’re at their most vulnerable and frustrated.
A crowd of unhappy Flames gathered, including Milan Lucic and Backlund, who shared their displeasure with today’s version of the Little Ball of Hate.
Watch the Marchand goal and aftermath below. Calgary won the game 5-2.

Brad Marchand No Longer A Rat
by Paul on 11/18/19 at 02:09 PM ET
Comments (5)
from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,
Don’t look now, but Marchand hasn’t received a fine in more than a year-and-a-half and hasn’t been suspended in almost two years. (Although he should have been lighter in the wallet for drilling Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Scott Harrington in the back of the head during the playoffs.)
Even though Marchand is on pace for a career high in penalty minutes, he’s concentrating more on being an elite player than an elite pain in the rear end. And it’s manifesting itself into superstar-like production. After posting 100 points last season, he was on pace for career highs in goals (53) and points (131). The sample size now is large enough to surmise that Marchand is indeed one of the elite talents in the world. At the age of 31, no less.
And there might not be a guy in the league today who is giving his team better value for its money than Marchand is for the Bruins.

The Boston Bruins Advance And Brad Marchand’s Act
by Paul on 05/07/19 at 07:49 AM ET
Comments (8)
from Tara Sullivan of the Boston Globe,
Bruins’ captain Zdeno Chara was the first one to turn and head toward his own goal late Monday night, certain as he was the final seconds were ticking away in this final second-round playoff game against the Blue Jackets and no longer held any suspense for the outcome, eager as he was to thank the man most responsible for clinching Boston’s ticket to the Eastern Conference Final.
Chara skated straight into Tuukka Rask’s crease and straight into a hug with his veteran teammate, and within moments, the two Bruins were encircled by the rest of the roster, all of them waiting for their turn at Rask, the man who had just owned that space so completely and so dominantly that the hometown Blue Jackets never had a chance at extending this series to a seventh game. If we’ve seen the best of the Bruins across these past three games, three straight victories topped by Monday’s 3-0 shutout to pave the way to the franchise’s first conference final appearance since 2013, we’ve seen it because we’ve seen the best of a goaltender who has found ways to top himself night after night, this time with a 39-save shutout.
So on the Bruins go now, ahead to a Hurricanes team idling since its sweep of the Islanders, into the penultimate step to a Stanley Cup journey that has felt at times almost inevitable, when the first-round carnage left Boston as the top remaining seed in the conference, at times almost impossible, down three different times to Toronto in the first round, down 2-1 again in this series against a streaking Columbus team anchored by its own outstanding goaltender.
from Crhis Johnston of Sportsnet,
Something is bothering Brad Marchand.
Either that, or the opportunity to return to the Eastern Conference Final for the first time since 2013 left the Boston Bruins winger speechless.
Marchand has not been in a talkative mood since cameras caught him punching Columbus Blue Jackets defenceman Scott Harrington in the back of the head late in Game 3 of the second-round series.
After Boston eliminated Columbus with a 3-0 win on Monday night, Marchand was short with Sportsnet reporter Kyle Bukauskus during an on-ice interview and did his best Marshawn Lynch impression during a 19-question scrum with reporters afterwards.
Below, watch part of Marchand's act below.

Brad Marchand’s Character
by Paul on 05/01/19 at 08:09 AM ET
Comments (1)
from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,
Brad Marchand’s punch to the back of Blue Jackets defenseman Scott Harrington’s head would be a minor incident for most players during the NHL playoffs.
Frustration. Tempers boiling over. Out of character. Slap on the wrist.
But this isn’t out of character for the Bruins forward. This is a player who can’t control himself. This is a player with a problem. In his career, he has been suspended six times for 19 games and fined three times. He has earned his reputation of being a dirty player. He knows he’s always under the microscope. He surely understands that the next suspension could be lengthy.
Plus, he’s in an important second-round playoff series. His team is trailing 2-1. He’s one of the three most important players on his team, the No. 5 scorer in the NHL.
The Bruins have spoken to him privately in the past. Coach Bruce Cassidy has said publicly the team needs Marchand, one of the league’s top left wings, to play more in control.

Videos- The Boston Bruins Are Not Playing Their Game & Brad Marchand Being Himself
by Paul on 05/01/19 at 02:16 AM ET
Comments (8)
from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,
This may not be the center of the hockey universe 4-6 weeks from now, but it is at the moment, and it doesn’t look like the Bruins are about to change anyone’s mind. At least not any time soon.
The Blue Jackets are the best team in the Stanley Cup playoffs at this hour, and they showed that with convincing force and competitive push Tuesday night with their 2-1 win over the Black and Gold that gave them a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven series.
Three laps into Round 2, all three games have been settled by a goal, the first two in overtime. All close encounters of the Cup kind. But the Blue Jackets showed in Game 3, before a roaring, snorting, and cannon-blasting sellout house of 19,337, that they can continue to keep the Bruins’ best offensive players quieter than Crane Beach on a frozen January morn, and that their goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky (36 saves), has the early inside edge for the Conn Smythe trophy as postseason MVP.

Video- Brad Marchand Not Happy With Goal Celebration
by Paul on 10/04/18 at 08:47 AM ET
Comments (9)
via Matt Porter of the Boston Globe,
His lower lip swollen, an inch-long cut dotting his cheek, and with little interest in dwelling on the matter, Brad Marchand said he was sticking up for his teammates when he mugged Capitals center Lars Eller late in Wednesday night’s a season-opening rout.
“The celebration was unnecessary,” said Marchand, who was ejected at 13:54 of the third. “He took an angle in front of our bench and celebrated in a 7-0 game.”...
It earned the oft-disciplined left wing 17 penalty minutes for instigating, fighting, and a misconduct.
“That’s good,” coach Bruce Cassidy said. “He’s a proud guy. I think Eller was celebrating a little on a 7-0 goal. That’s his prerogative. Marshy let him know that’s not acceptable.”
Below watch the goal and Marchand fighting Eller.

Brad Marchand May Be The Most Hated Star In Hockey
by Paul on 10/01/18 at 08:07 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Matt Porter of the Boston Globe,
If they hopped in a time machine and met in a seven-game playoff series, Brad Marchand would make Cam Neely’s blood boil.
“In that era,” Neely said, “I would get away with punching him in the face a few times.
“In this era, I don’t know. I might be in the penalty box. But I would take him with me.”
Their interactions in real life are not combative, but candid and communicative. The Bruins team president with the Hall of Fame résumé is an understanding mentor to his star left winger.
Marchand does not enjoy such support around the league.
They loathe him in Vancouver, where he speedbagged a Sedin and lifted the Stanley Cup. They can’t stand him in Toronto, where he has broken playoff-hungry hearts. They hated him in Tampa long before Ryan Callahan wiped slobber from his face.
As of two weeks ago, they even booed him in China.

Brad Marchand Is Your Tour Guide In China
by Paul on 09/18/18 at 12:33 PM ET

from Brad Marchand at NHL.com,
BEIJING -- Yesterday was fun.
After our practice was pushed back from Monday morning to Monday afternoon, we went to the Silk Market. It was cool to be out in the market, really cool to be out there, kind of out in Chinese everyday life and have an opportunity to do a little bit of shopping. It was a lot of fun. The whole team was there; coaches, trainers and everyone.
We all have a little bit of down time, where some guys want to rest. There have been some long days too. Some guys wanted to go there and shop, but there's other opportunities where we do want to all get together, and that's where we build relationships and bond on the road.
But most of us did go to the Silk Market, and it was a fun experience. I haven't been anywhere like it. Any time you go to foreign countries there's always things that are kind of like that, to some extent, but it's normally a lot smaller. It was actually a little overwhelming, the different things that were in there.

Will Brad Marchand Change?
by Paul on 05/09/18 at 08:01 PM ET
Comments (2)
from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,
“Some things I’ve done clearly need some fixing,” said Marchand, who will turn 30 years old Friday. “So I think that’s going to be the biggest thing that I take away from what’s happened the last few days — to actually take a look and really understand these things have much bigger consequences.”
Short on temper, but long on offensive production (a team-high 34-51—85 this season), Marchand became the talk of the playoffs for all the wrong reasons.
He sincerely sounded like he regrets it all, so much so that it sounded as if he had been admonished by club management.

Mornin Line- Steve Buckley On Brad Marchand
by Paul on 05/07/18 at 07:57 AM ET
Comments (12)
I write these words as someone who as recently as two weeks ago thought the whole thing was goofy (to borrow Cassidy’s word) but otherwise harmless. What I didn’t know was that it was fast becoming Marchand’s calling card. And that became the problem: Once it became commonplace, it ceased being funny. It became boorish, embarrassing, to the degree that the NHL had no choice but to take the unprecedented step of issuing a no-licking decree.
The zero-tolerance policy that had been in place whenever Marchand is on the ice had been reduced to a sub-zero policy. Yesterday’s game was just 12 minutes old when Marchand was slapped with a 2-minute minor for embellishment. If you believe it was a ticky-tack call — and I’m guessing many of you do — it may have occurred to you that the real reason Marchand was whistled off was for licking Ryan Callahan in Game 4.

Brad Marchand Goes Nuts As A Three-Year Old
by Paul on 04/19/18 at 02:39 PM ET
Comments (1)
from Brad Marchand at The Players' Tribune,
If you like me, you’ll like this story.
If you hate me, you’ll love it.
It’s kind of a famous story in my family, and it’s probably the first thing I can remember. I was like three years old, and my dad had bought me this sick electric four-wheeler truck for my birthday. I’d always ride it around the cul-de-sac outside our house in Halifax like a maniac. It was yellow with blue seats, and it even had a horn and everything. It was unreal.
So one day I was hanging out with one of my little neighbor buddies, and I guess I got distracted or something, because the next thing I know, I turn around, and he’s in the truck, honking the horn, just lovin’ it.
So, of course, I go nuts.

No Slap Shots For Brad Marchand
by Paul on 03/24/18 at 02:09 PM ET

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,
Alex Ovechkin (44 goals), Steven Stamkos (27), and Tyler Seguin (39) are among the league’s best at putting pucks in nets. Ditto for Brad Marchand (31).
The fascinating part is how each approaches his craft. Ovechkin, Stamkos, and Seguin, right-shot forwards, do not hesitate to rip off slap shots. Through 74 games, Ovechkin led all forwards with 93 slappers, according to the NHL. Stamkos had 71, second-most after Ovechkin. Seguin was in the No. 3 hole with 62 slap shots.
Through 58 games, Marchand had none.
“That sounds about right,” Marchand said. “I don’t think I’ve taken a slap shot in a lot of years. I don’t plan on taking one any time soon either. My stick’s too long to take a slap shot. It would just be an embarrassment to my team and myself.”

Brad Marchand On His Reputation
by Paul on 02/06/18 at 09:25 AM ET
Comments (5)
from Matt Kalman of the Boston Herald,
Marchand, though, will be a welcome addition to the Bruins lineup for the stretch run. And while he’ll be looking to help the Bruins, he’ll also be trying to rehabilitate his own image after his sixth, and longest, NHL suspension.
Marchand is on the verge of a third straight 30-goal season, but his disciplinary issues have tarnished his reputation as much as his production has boosted it.
“It’s tough. I’ve tried for a while now to kind of get away from that role and just can’t seem to escape it,” Marchand said after yesterday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena. “I think obviously you look at the last few years, I’ve turned into a decent player, and it’s tough to be branded with that name consistently. Obviously it’s from my own doing, but it’s tough to escape.
“It’s what I had to do to get in the league, so I’ll never say that I wouldn’t go back and play the same way coming into the league, and it’s what I had to earn a job and get to where I am today. But it’s definitely tougher. It’s something . . . when you’re done, you want to look back on it and say that you’re remembered as a decent player, and I’ve had a decent run with the (Stanley) Cup and World Championship, World Cup and World Juniors. So there’s some accolades there, too, that I want to be remembered for, but it’s kind of overshadowed right now.”

Only Five Games For Brad Marchand?
by Paul on 01/25/18 at 12:01 PM ET
Comments (0)
from Ken Campbell of The Hockey News,
Brad Marchand's vicious elbow to the head of Marcus Johansson was bad enough, but the NHL's feeble five-game suspension for such a flagrant transgression by a six-time offender is even worse.
The same league that has proved time and again that it has no interest in protecting its star players from the actions of thugs and miscreants is more than happy to protect stars who are thugs and miscreants themselves. That’s really the only conclusion that can be drawn from the NHL’s ridiculously feeble five-game suspension to Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins for his flying elbow to the head of Marcus Johansson of the New Jersey Devils.
It’s bad enough that Marchand only received five games for an action that was so egregious, so blatant and so gratuitously vicious and dirty. But what makes it worse is that George Parros and his band at the NHL’s department of player safety watched Marchand’s indiscretion hundreds of times in slow motion from every angle and never had any intention of giving him more than five games.

Brad Marchand, superstar…and rat
by George Malik on 02/08/17 at 06:37 PM ET
Comments (1)
Sportsnet's Ryan Dixon penned a "Big Read" about Brad Marchand's transformation into one of the league's best players--and a player who's remained one of the league's biggest pests:
Not so long ago, the notion of mentioning Marchand in the same breath as Sidney Crosby, Mario Lemieux or Alex Ovechkin was tantamount to sliding a cheeseburger into a debate about the world’s greatest steak. But in the past 18 months, few players in the NHL have scored with the frequency of the Boston Bruins left winger, who netted a career-high 37 goals last year, sits fourth in NHL scoring this season despite playing for a club that’s in the bottom third of the league offensively and suddenly finds himself included on Canada’s top squads and getting invited to all-star games.
Marchand himself still seems slightly taken aback by that idea and it’s definitely hard to square for people who first came to know him in a much different context. While many these days may toast his national-team accomplishments, those same voices will deride him as a pest and a cheap-shot artist when club loyalties come into play. And, to be sure, his more boneheaded acts have definitely drawn bi-partisan ire. Increasingly, though, any conversation about the always-buzzing Bruin requires its share of superlatives to describe just how good a player Marchand has turned himself into.

by Paul on 02/01/17 at 08:36 AM ET

via Roger Mooney of the Tampa Bay Times,
When asked if he thought Marchand should have been called for a penalty, Stralman said, "I can't say. There's contact and I fall. I can't say if he did anything or not, but I'm not the puck holder. I'm out in the neutral zone, and I get hit from behind. That's all I got to say."
The NHL's Department of Player Safety will review the play. The DPS reviewed a similar play by Marchand on Jan. 24 against Detroit's Niklas Kronwall and fined Marchand $10,000.
Bruins coach Claude Julien said he did not see Marchand's hit on Stralman. When told it was similar to the one on Kronwall, Julien said, "Well, I guess I will see it."

Brad Marchand Is A Complete Hockey Player
by Paul on 11/02/16 at 10:39 AM ET
Comments (0)
from Joe McDonald of ESPN,
In Marchand, the Bruins acquired a player with skill, skating ability, hockey IQ, character and competitiveness. Now in his eighth NHL season, the 28-year-old forward has reached new levels in all of those categories, especially in terms of his compete level.
"It's pretty impressive the way he's improved," said Bruins alternate captain and longtime linemate Patrice Bergeron. "I've always thought he was an amazing player to play with. The way he's handled himself on the ice night in and night out -- he's always been first on pucks, working hard, competing and all that -- I just think he's improved his game from one year to another. He got 37 goals last year and it wasn't a fluke. Obviously, we're seeing that right now. It's great to see."
So far this season, Marchand has three goals and seven assists for 10 points in eight games. He has carried over the success he had at the World Cup of Hockey, where he helped lead Team Canada to a championship with five goals and three assists for eight points in six games. The decision by Team Canada and coach Mike Babcock to give Marchand a roster spot and put him on the top line, along with Sidney Crosby and Bergeron, was based on that compete level.

What To Pay Brad Marchand?

from Joe Haggerty of CSNNE,
But it will be a new challenge for the 28-year-old headed into this season as it’s the final year of his contract with the Bruins ahead of unrestricted free agency. Marchand is coming off a career year where he scored 37 goals and really took a step forward for the Black and Gold. As the Nose Face Killah himself admitted, “it’s a high bar” to reach headed into a season where a lot of pressure could be on his shoulders individually and team-wise....
Given his age and his production, Marchand should easily expect to top the six-year, $36 million contract given to Loui Eriksson by the Vancouver Canucks on July 1. Another season for Marchand similar to last season – if the Bruins allow it to get to that point without a long-term contract extension -- could make the left winger one of the top salaried players on the roster.
An argument could easily be made that Marchand should be paid in the neighborhood of top wingers Bobby Ryan and Zach Parise, and that would put No. 63’s price tag in the $7 million to $7.5 million-per-season range without even taking the natural inflation of salaries year-to-year into account.
Beyond the numbers and his comprables around the NHL, it’s about the attitude and competitiveness that Marchand brings to the table for a Bruins team that’s gone alarmingly soft in the past two seasons while missing the playoffs. He’s one of the few players still retaining some bite from the Cup team of the recent past. That’s a key ingredient for success and keeping the old-time hockey fans happy around Boston.

Brad Marchand’s Year

from Dominik Luszczyszyn of The Hockey News,
If there was a consensus “least favourite player” in the league among fans, it’d probably be Brad Marchand. Considering all the dirty and sometimes reckless plays the Bruins left winger has administered over the years, it’s a pretty deserved reputation too.
Fans always remember the bad stuff, and it’s because of that they forget just how good Marchand actually is. This season he’s reached another level, one that even THN web editor Ian Denomme didn’t realize.
“Holy s–––, Brad Marchand is on pace for 42 goals. That’s insane,” was his immediate reaction when this story was pitched. After coming up short in a 2-1 Bruins win on Tuesday that pace has actually dropped to 41, but the point still stands: Marchand – who doesn’t have a 30 goal season to his name – might actually hit 40 this year. (And he’d probably have a better chance too if it wasn’t for this dumb play in late December that earned him a three game suspension).
Marchand is currently fifth in the league with 28 goals in 52 games. The torrid pace is thanks in part to his current hot streak where he’s scored 13 goals in 14 games, vaulting him up the leaderboards. Even more impressive is that Marchand averages just 18:32 of ice-time per game, while everyone above him gets at least an extra minute per game, not to mention more powerplay time, too. In terms of efficiency, Marchand is second only to Alex Ovechkin among the league’s Top 10 goal scoring leaders at 1.8 goals per 60 minutes.

Video- The Boston Bruins Win In OT By A Penalty Shot Goal Not Without Controversy

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,
Sometimes, the video is hard to decipher. And sometimes, it shows an official blowing a call in hard-to-believe fashion in full high definition.
Such was the case Saturday night in TD Garden, as Brad Marchand scored on a penalty shot gifted by referee Brad Watson with 2:28 left in overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 2-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres.
After intercepting a Rasmus Ristolainen pass just outside the Buffalo blue line, Marchand tried to break into the Sabres’ zone. Ristolainen closed from Marchand’s left rear and the Boston center quickly lifted the Buffalo defenseman’s stick out of his hands into the air as the puck slid ahead of the pair. Ristolainen tried to put his right arm on Marchand and appeared to miss him before landing a two-hand shove to the back as goaltender Robin Lehner poke-checked the puck away.
Watson’s arm went up to signal a penalty and the Sabres were stunned to see him point to center ice. Marchand scored on the backhand and Lehner was among several Sabres barking at the officials after the goal ended the game. The goaltender even chucked his helmet to the ice in disgust.
