Answers Needed By Those Involved Regarding Domestic Violence

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

We have no idea how the NHL settled upon 27 games as the length of the suspension imposed on Austin Watson after the Nashville forward pleaded no contest to a domestic assault charge in July. The league has no domestic violence policy. Matters of this sort are left to the commissioner’s sole discretion under Article 18 of the CBA.

Similarly, we have no idea why Shyam Das, the arbitrator who heard the grievance filed by the NHLPA on behalf of its dues-paying member, reduced that suspension by a full one-third, to 18 games. There was no precedent to examine, other than the NHL’s ongoing indefinite suspension of Slava Voynov, disciplined in 2014 following his arrest for domestic violence.

The league has expressed its deep disappointment with the decision. The PA issued a statement in which the union essentially explained its responsibility to the appeal process outlined in the CBA while proclaiming its commitment to educating its members on the domestic violence issue. Citing sensitivity and privacy, the union has not made the arbitrator’s decision available to players or agents.

So we don’t know

Austin Watson Suspended 27 Games

NEW YORK (Sept. 12, 2018) – Nashville Predators’ forward Austin Watson has been suspended for all preseason and the first 27 games of the 2018-19 regular season, without pay, for unacceptable off-ice conduct, the National Hockey League announced today.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman levied the suspension under Rule 18-A of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Commissioner’s ruling came following an investigation by the League and an in-person hearing in New York on Friday, Sept. 7. The investigation and hearing were conducted, pursuant to the CBA, to determine the relevant facts and circumstances relating to a June 16, 2018, incident involving Austin Watson and his domestic partner. The incident ultimately resulted in Watson pleading no contest to a charge of domestic assault on July 24, 2018.

“I have determined that Nashville Player Austin Watson engaged in a physical confrontation with his domestic partner,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “Today’s ruling, while tailored to the specific facts of this case and the individuals involved, is necessary and consistent with the NHL’s strongly held view that it cannot and will not tolerate this and similar types of conduct.”

Bill Daly On Slava Voynov And Austin Watson

from Kevin Allen of USA TODAY,

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said Thursday the league has started a formal investigation into former Los Angeles Kings defenseman Slava Voynov 2015 domestic-abuse conviction to determine whether he should be allowed to return to the NHL.

“There were discussions over the course of the summer, including an in-person meeting the player had with Gary (Bettman) where the process started, but not in a formal way,” Daly told USA TODAY Sports. “There were some discussions over the parameters by which he could potentially return, but they didn’t prove fruitful. So we are now engaged in an investigation.”

Daly also said the NHL has completed its investigation into Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson’s no-contest plea to misdemeanor assault for reportedly swatting his girlfriend. He said an announcement of the league's ruling will come before training camp.

Details On Austin Watson’s Arrest

from Natalie Neysa Alund and Adam Tamburin of The Tennessean,

The criminal investigation into Nashville Predators forward Austin Watson started after a witness saw the athlete "swat" his girlfriend outside a gas station and block her from getting out of their Jaguar SUV, newly released police reports show.

Watson, 26, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of domestic assault last week....

The witness was smoking a cigarette when the SUV "pulled up quickly into the gas station parking lot" outside a Murfreesboro Road gas station, according to a Franklin police report.

After the witness saw the couple fighting and flagged down a passing officer, the victim initially denied Watson had touched her. Later in the interview, she said Watson was responsible for causing scratches on her chest.

The 31-year-old victim, who is also the mother of Watson's child, told police that "sometimes he gets handsy," although the report did not elaborate on what that entailed....

In 2017, Watson was one of several Predators team members to participate in a public-awareness campaign titled "Unsilence the Violence."
