Lilja Making An Impression With The Ducks

from Eric Stephens of the OC Register,

Lilja has brought the Ducks a contribution that go well beyond the scoresheet.

It is in the form of a small play to get the puck out of trouble or a blocked shot on the penalty kill. It is the big check he delivered Friday night against Dallas forward Jamie Benn. It is the experience built over many years of pro hockey, first in his native Sweden and then the past nine seasons in the NHL.

Lilja, 35, was part of a Stanley Cup champion team in Detroit in 2008, and he helped establish much-needed stability with the Ducks.

“He’s been a positive influence in our dressing room,” Coach Randy Carlyle said. “He’s a veteran guy that has been in a lot of games and he understands what it takes to be consistent.

Evening Line

“I think I fit in great.  I’ve played a bunch of games against Anaheim. It’s kind of another system a little bit. Obviously I’ll have to sit down with coach and he’ll tell me what to do. But I’m real excited.”

Lilja A Duck?

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Former Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja, whose visa was set to expire today, apparently has signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks, according to Sweden’s Expressen.

The Ducks needed some help on defense after Andy Sutton fractured his thumb in a fight with Detroit’s Ruslan Salei on Friday.

Lilja Gambled And Lost

from The Sporting News,

Things are not going quite the way Andreas Lilja planned when he opted to go to San Jose’s training camp on a tryout basis rather than accept a firm contract offer from the Red Wings. Suddenly, he finds himself out of work and facing a visa deadline that could force him to leave the United States.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Lilja turned down a one-year, $1 million summer offer from the Red Wings, for whom he had played the last five years — including their Stanley Cup-winning season of 2008. On Tuesday he was told he will not be offered a contract by the Sharks.

Lilja Goes Camping With San Jose

via Sharks.com,

The Sharks are bringing in defenseman Andreas Lilja as a tryout player for training camp.  Lilja spent the past five seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and Sharks Head Coach Todd McLellan is very familiar with him from his time as an assistant coach in the Motor City.

“He’s going to make it a more competitive camp because he’s a veteran player,” said McLellan.  “He is familiar with the coaching staff and our system because it is similar to what he came from.  Once camp starts, he is like any other player and his play will dictate whether he (gets a contract).”

Lilja Regrets Not Signing With Detroit

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

The Red Wings offered Lilja a one-year deal for $1 million to return for a sixth season. He continued seeking a better deal on the market. When Detroit signed Ruslan Salei on Aug. 9 to a one-year, $750,000 contract (with another $350,000 in potential bonuses), the door was closed on Lilja’s return….

Lilja and his family on Thursday returned to Detroit from their summer home in Sweden. The kids will start the school year here, but Lilja has put his house up for sale while he continues seeking an NHL contract.

“Of course, I regret it (not signing with Detroit),’’ Lilja said. “Now that we got here yesterday, got into my house—we’ve been here five years, it feels like home. The kids like it here. I think I was looking for something else, I guess.’’

Lilja Returns To Lineup After A One Year Absence

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Playing physical, dishing out hits and absorbing them, is a big part of Andreas Lilja’s game.

He is determined to make sure that doesn’t change, after returning to the lineup for the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, one year and one day removed from his last NHL game, when he suffered a concussion.

“I just have to go out and play my regular game, and if it doesn’t hold up, it doesn’t hold up,’’ Lilja said before playing the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center. “I will have to deal with that then.

“If I stay away from playing physical I might as well start playing bandy (a form of ball hockey). It’s part of the game. Everybody plays physical. That’s what I have to do.’’

Lilja Goes To Grand Rapids

via Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja has been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins on long-term injured-reserve conditioning loan, general manager Ken Holland said this evening.

That means Lilja can be with the Griffins for three games and six days, and the Wings can appeal for two more games, Holland said.

Lilja Likely Headed To Grand Rapids For Rehab Assignment

via Ansar Khan of Mlive,

General manager Ken Holland said the club is in the process of finalizing the details of the conditioning stint. Holland said it would be for three games and six days and include an option to extend it for two days.

Lilja, who has been out since Feb. 28 of last season with a concussion, said this morning that he would welcome a stint with the Griffins.

“I’ve been out for so long, if they told me to go down I wouldn’t hesitate,’’ Lilja said. “I need game time. If that means I have to go down to Grand Rapids to play, I got nothing against that.’’

Lilja would not count against the salary cap or the 23-man NHL roster while in Grand Rapids.

Franzen ‘Runs’ Lilja

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

He’s been practicing with the team for months, but Detroit Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja hasn’t had any contact. Now that he sees a light at the end of the tunnel—he has been headache-free for 14 days—he wanted to see how he would react to a hit.

So he asked Johan Franzen to run him after practice.

“I had Mule run me yesterday in practice. He picked up all his 230 pounds and threw it at me,’’ Lilja said. “My body hurt, but my head was really good. It felt real good.’’

Lilja Visits A Vancouver Chiropractor & Headaches Seem To Be Gone

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“It’s unbelievable,’’ Lilja said. “I’d been having headaches for eight months. Then I see him for one day and headaches disappear for three days.’’

Lilja Going On LTIR

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

General manager Ken Holland confirmed that defenseman Andreas Lilja will start the season on long-term injured reserve. Lilja, who hasn’t been cleared for contact due to headaches and concussion-like symptoms, isn’t even allowed to skate with the team in practices. Lilja said he hopes to skate on his own Monday.

Lilja on IR puts the Wings under the salary cap, so there’s no need to trade a defenseman for the time being.

“Lils has had a setback,’’ Babcock said. “It doesn’t look to me like he’s in the picture at all.’‘

Lilja Improving

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Red Wings defenseman Andreas Lilja isn’t sure if he’ll be ready for the start of training camp Sunday, but he is confident he eventually will be cleared to play again.

Lilja, plagued by headaches and concussion-like symptoms since Feb. 28, said Tuesday he hoped to learn more after having some tests, including an MRI this afternoon.

“I’m a lot more positive,’’ Lilja said. “I’m almost 100 percent sure I’m going to play, it’s just a matter of when.’‘

Lilja Getting Appendectomy Today

From Bruce MacLeod at Red Wings Corner

Andreas Lilja is having an appendectomy today and won’t be with the team in St. Louis. The defenseman could return to the lineup as early as Friday, according to coach Mike Babcock, but that does seem like a very speedy recovery.

Appendectomy on Tuesday and playing NHL hockey on Friday??  Methinks Babcock is a bit of an optimist…
