GLENDALE, ARIZONA —Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Don Maloney announced today that the Coyotes have signed defenseman Anders Eriksson to a contract. As per Club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. In addition, Eriksson has been recalled to the Coyotes.
Eriksson, 34, had been playing for the Coyotes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, where he recorded 1-2-3 in eight games. Eriksson has appeared in 552 career National Hockey League (NHL) games with the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames, recording 22-149-171 and 240 penalty minutes (PIM) over parts of 11 NHL seasons. He was a member of the 1998 Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings and has registered six assists and 18 PIM in 36 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, including two games with Calgary during the 2009 Playoffs.

Not surprisingly, the Calgary Flames have placed Anders Eriksson on re-entry waivers in an attempt to bolster their injury-battered defence.
The question remains whether another team will put in a claim just to deny the Flames his services in the first round against Chicago.
Coach Mike Keenan said last week that such a move would violate the unwritten code among NHL executives, but anything is possible.
from the Calgary Herald,
...Because Detroit, too, is where Anders Eriksson got saddled with that nickname.
“I guess I had a large behind when I got there,” he was recalling after the Calgary Flames practice Sunday afternoon. “That was Kris Draper’s funny joke. First it was Big Swede, then Big Ass, then Bubble Butt, then Bubba. Now, most of the guys just call me Bubs. That’s the evolution of the whole thing. It’s stuck for 12 years.”
