Alex Ovechkin Should Not Be Suspended For Missing The All-Star Weekend

from Christine Brennan of USA TODAY,

Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin is being suspended by the NHL for one game for what amounts to being really smart.

At the wise old hockey age of 33, Ovechkin is skipping a meaningless exhibition – the league’s All-Star Game – to save himself for the rest of the season and presumably the playoffs, where the Capitals will be trying to win a second consecutive Stanley Cup.

Ovechkin should be hailed for this decision, not punished for it. He’s missing the pomp and circumstance of the All-Star Game to help ensure his availability for the most important portion of the NHL season, the playoffs. If college football stars not playing in bowl games, which still count towards a team’s record, has become acceptable, then a player like Ovechkin reasonably missing an exhibition game so he can be available to his team for the rest of the season should be too.

Unfortunately, that’s not how it works in the NHL.

Alex Ovechkin’s Year

from Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post,

He won the Stanley Cup. He increased his legend by the way he celebrated. He came back from the shortest summer of his hockey life, newly minted as a first-time father, and rolled into a season in which a letdown was not only understandable but all but assumed. And through 30 games, he has 25 goals, four more than any other player in the league.

How many Alex Ovechkin appreciation pieces is one too many Alex Ovechkin appreciation pieces?

Hold your answer because we have no idea how much longer he’s going to play. So for now, hit those same notes.

“O’s a freak,” right wing T.J. Oshie said.

“This is a player that’s reinventing himself,” first-year Coach Todd Reirden said.

Alex Ovechkin And The U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team Earn Awards At The ESPYs

ARLINGTON, Va. – Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has been named the recipient of the Best Male Athlete at the 2018 ESPYS, becoming the first NHL player to win the award since the inaugural ESPYs in 1993. Ovechkin beat out Jose Altuve (Houston Astros), James Harden (Houston Rockets) and Tom Brady (New England Patriots).

Following a 49-goal season, Ovechkin won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy as the NHL's top goal scorer for NHL-record seventh time. Ovechkin is tied with Bobby Hull for the most times a single player has led the NHL in goals in a season. This postseason, the Moscow, Russia, native captured his first Conn Smythe Trophy and became the first Russian player to captain a Stanley Cup champion. Ovechkin ranks first in franchise history in goals (607), points (1,122), power play goals (229), game-winning goals (102), overtime goals (22), shots (4,896) and multi-goal games (120). Additionally, since entering the NHL at the beginning of the 2005-06 season, Ovechkin leads the NHL in goals (607), points (1,122), power-play goals (229), power play points (436), game-winning goals (102) and shots (4,896). Ovechkin leads the NHL in goals since 1998-99 and shots since the 1994-95 season despite beginning his NHL career in 2005. Ovechkin, 32, became the second player since the 1967-68 expansion era to lead the NHL in goals at the age of 32 or older (Phil Esposito led the NHL twice in goals just before his 33rd and 34th birthday).

Ovechkin recorded his 1,100th career point (592g, 508a) on Feb. 15 against the Minnesota Wild and became the 61st player in NHL history to reach the 1,100-point milestone, reaching the feat in his 978th career game. Only 23 players required fewer games to accumulate 1,100 career points, with Jaromir Jagr (825 games, played on Nov. 30, 2001 as a member of the Capitals) the last to hit the mark in less than 1,000 games. Additionally, Ovechkin, who on Jan. 11, 2017, became the lone Capitals player to compile 1,000 career points (880 GP) and became the 26th player in NHL history to require fewer than 100 contests to move from 1,000 to 1,100 (98 GP).

LOS ANGELES – The gold medal-winning 2018 U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team earned the 2018 ESPY for Best Game for its 3-2 shootout victory over Canada in the gold-medal game at the 2018 Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The team received the honored here tonight at the 2018 ESPYs at the Microsoft Theater.

The Cup In Moscow

from Tom Gulitti of NHL.com,

The biggest issue for Alex Ovechkin during the first of his two days with the Stanley Cup in Moscow was time.

The Washington Capitals captain wanted to give as many people in his hometown as possible the opportunity to see the Cup on Saturday. But even with the help of a police escort to navigate Moscow's notorious traffic, he felt like he was racing against the clock.

"You have so much that's going on in your mind, but as soon as you get it, you see the schedule," Ovechkin said. "You thought you were going to have 24 hours, right? But you basically have like 12 hours. So in 12 hours you have to do the maximum what you can."

Here's a rundown of how Ovechkin did it:

Post-Game Transcript- Barry Trotz And Alex Ovechkin

via the NHL PR department,

COACH BARRY TROTZ

Q. We talked earlier in the playoffs about having a kinship with some of these players that have gone through a lot, haven't been able to get over the hump. When Ovi handed you the Cup, what was that moment like?
BARRY TROTZ: It was sort of a real special moment because we've sort of lived the same life a little bit. We had a conversation. Obviously we were down 2-0 against Columbus. We said, we're winning tomorrow, and we're going to go win a Cup together.

We got a good bond. I think we have a good relationship. I was really happy for him. I'm so happy for that group, for all the stuff that they had to endure, all the things that were said about them, Ovi in particular, Backie, that whole group.

To me, they changed all the narratives. They checked off every box. Look at every series, we were down in every series, come back in every one. It was probably fitting we were down in this game and had to come back and win.

Alex Ovechkin Is One Win Away From Raising The Stanley Cup

from Isabelle Khurshudyan of The Washington Post,

On Jan. 6, 2010, Alex Ovechkin emerged from the dressing room for warmups, second in line behind the goaltender, just like any other home game. While lacking in fanfare, that pregame twirl around the ice was Ovechkin’s introduction as captain, a “C” stitched onto his jersey for a first time as the Washington Capitals‘ face and best player and also their official leader. More than eight years later, Ovechkin will pull on a jersey with that same “C” on the chest before skating onto the T-Mobile Arena ice just one win away from a first Stanley Cup.

The double-edged sword of the captaincy means he shoulders the burden of criticism after repeated playoff disappointments yet basks in most of the glory of victory. If the Capitals, holding a 3-1 series lead in these best-of-seven Stanley Cup finals against the Vegas Golden Knights, are ultimately victorious, Ovechkin would be the first to hoist the trophy and the one to bring the Stanley Cup to Washington, a place he’s called his “second home.” But the moment will simultaneously resonate on the opposite side of the globe, Ovechkin’s Russian roots and the first home he so proudly represents. He is just the sixth Russian captain in NHL history, and he is on the cusp of becoming the first to win a championship.

Morning Line- Steve Simmons

Maybe the last winger to be a face of a franchise and a Cup champion was Guy Lafleur in Montreal and that was more than 40 years ago. And that Montreal team still had Ken Dryden, Larry Robinson, Serge Savard, a lot of faces to go around, only one with hair flying in the wind. The winger named Lafleur.

Ovechkin’s hair is trapped beneath his helmet, so instead, his flying in the wind comes from the way he streaks down the ice, from the way he attacks, the way he leads, the way he changes games emotionally, the way he celebrates like no one else who’s ever played.

Ovie’s game. Ovie’s time. Two games to go. The long wait is almost over.

Time For Alex Ovechkin To Raise The Cup

from Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette,

There are sentences that you never expect to put on paper. This is one for me: It won’t be difficult to watch Alex Ovechkin hoist the Stanley Cup.

Sacrilegious, right?

Don’t get me wrong. Like most Pittsburghers, I would love to see Marc-Andre Fleury’s Vegas Golden Knights beat Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals in the Cup final, which begins Monday night in Las Vegas. Fleury might be the best teammate and best sports person I’ve known in our city. He is the first goaltender since the New York Islanders’ Billy Smith in the early-1980s to play in three consecutive finals. How sweet it would be to see him walk away with not just the Cup — the fourth of his Hall of Fame-caliber career — but also the Conn Smythe Trophy as NHL postseason MVP. He’s a lock for the award if Vegas wins....

All I’m saying is Ovechkin has grown on me. I no longer look at him as just the Penguins’ most despised rival who once took out Sergei Gonchar with a despicable knee-on-knee hit and routinely tried to knock countryman Evgeni Malkin into next week. I see him as the greatest goal-scorer of his generation and one of the best players of my lifetime.

Along with the Stanley Cup Final coming up, we also have the World Cup soon.

The Vegas Golden Knights had very long odds and at Netbet world cup 2018 betting is the place to go to for all of your needs.

Excitement is in the air for the hockey and soccer world, participation will be at an all time high.

Video- John Tortorella Admits He Was Wrong In Exchange With Alex Ovechkin

from Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post,

After Columbus forward Matt Calvert was ejected for butt-ending Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin at the end of the first period, cameras caught Ovechkin and Blue Jackets Coach John Tortorella exchanging pleasantries in front of the Columbus bench before the second period.

After the game, Ovechkin seemed to laugh off the exchange. “We just talk about: ‘How’s everything? What’s going on?’ He’s a nice guy,” Ovechkin said with a grin.

But Tortorella expressed some regret over the incident.

“That’s my fault,” Tortorella said. “I thought he dove, and I signaled to him. I thought he dove, and he took exception. I have no business making any gesture or saying anything to a player. So that’s not on him. That’s just stupidity on my part.”

The Putin Team

from Rick Maese, Isabelle Khurshudyan and Andrew Roth of the Washington Post,

Ovechkin now finds himself awkwardly in the middle of a geopolitical maelstrom — perhaps by his own doing — tugged in multiple directions, just as he has been for much of his extraordinary career.

He has given an unwavering endorsement to a man who U.S. intelligence agencies say sanctioned Russian meddling in last year’s presidential election and whose athletes have drawn the ire of the international Olympic community for a state-sponsored doping scheme. At the same time, Ovechkin insists his advocacy is free of politics.

“I’m not a politic,” Ovechkin said in a recent interview. “I don’t know what’s happening out there. I know it’s a hard situation, but it is what it is. You know, I play here, and this is my second home. I don’t want to fight between two countries, because it’s going to be a mess.”

Ovechkin says the PutinTeam movement was his idea, though there are signs that a Kremlin-backed public-relations firm might have played a role.

Morning Line- Alex Luey, Teenaged Cancer Survivor On Alex Ovechkin

"I could not have asked for anything more," Luey said in the Capitals dressing room, Ovechkin's left arm draped around him. "I will never forget this night. Never."

-Alex Luey, 13-year-old cancer survivor.

from Mike Zeisberger of NHL.com,

This was for Alex.

The other Alex.

When Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin beat Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Curtis McElhinney at 12:43 of the first period on Saturday, he immediately gestured toward the Air Canada Centre stands in the area where he thought Alex Luey, 13, was sitting.

It was Ovechkin's way of saying: "I did it for you, Alex."

Just like he'd promised.

About an hour earlier, Luey, a cancer survivor, was sitting on the Capitals bench for the warmup when Ovechkin skated over to him.

"I'm going to score a goal for you tonight," Ovechkin told the boy.

Alex Ovechkin On Team Putin Social Movement

from Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post,

After the Capitals’ 4-3 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night, Ovechkin explained why he decided on this public show of support for Putin.

“I just support my country, you know?” Ovechkin said. “That’s where I’m from, my parents live there, all my friends. Like every human from different countries, they support their president.”

Asked if his support of Putin means translates into a support of Putin’s political ideals, Ovechkin said, “It’s not about political stuff.”

“I don’t try to be politics man or someone like that,” Ovechkin said. “I just support my president and just support my country because I’m from there, and you know, if people from U.S. came to Russia, they care about what happening in U.S. So, I care about what happening in Russia because that’s my home and that’s where I’m from.”

Trade Alex Ovechkin Or Not?

from Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post,

To date, there is no indication the franchise has, is or will consider trading the player that has helped turn Verizon Center from a sparsely-attended rink into a raucous (and profitable), sold-out arena, brimming to the rafters with red-clad Capitals fans for the past 364 home games. But the question raised by Melrose and Milbury, among others, begs a closer look at the mechanics of such a maneuver. While it’s easy to talk about trading Ovechkin, dealing a franchise’s most popular player with a $9.5 million salary cap hit for the next four years is a nearly impossible transaction in practice, even if the Capitals were interested in such a move.

Washington will almost certainly not deal Ovechkin this summer, but if the organization ever did reach a point where that was a consideration, the process for carrying out such a trade starts with a blessing from the owner and ends with the question of whether the Capitals would truly benefit from dealing one of the greatest goal-scorers in league history.

“I think they should consider it, and I think it’s a really tough deal to make,” said Sportsnet’s Doug MacLean, a former general manager for the Columbus Blue Jackets. “I wouldn’t want to be the guy making the deal. It’s easy for me when I’m in the media to talk about it now, but as a GM, I wouldn’t be talking about it so easily.”

Custom-Painted Skates In The NHL?

from Paul Lukas of ESPN,

Custom-painted footwear, which has become a huge phenomenon in the NFL, is coming to hockey, courtesy of one of the NHL's biggest stars, Alex Ovechkin.

When the Washington Capitals warm up prior to Thursday night's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, a game that the Caps are promoting as Russian Heritage Night, Ovechkin will be wearing custom-painted skates -- believed to be a first for an NHL player.

The two skate designs feature themes relating to Ovechkin's native and adopted countries -- Russia and the United States.

With Ovechkin poised to become the first NHL player to wear custom-painted skates, the question now is who'll be next, and whether the phenomenon will catch on as a league-wide trend like it has in the NFL. So many NFL players were wearing custom-designed cleats this past season, despite being fined for uniform violations, that the league designated a specific week in the 2016 schedule when players could wear the flashy footwear to highlight various charitable causes.

Could something like that eventually happen in the NHL? "It's probably too soon to talk about that," said Abrutyn, the agent. "What the NFL did was a really remarkable thing. If that were to occur with the NHL, with this being a jumping off point, that's probably a discussion for others to have, but it would be wonderful."

Alex Ovechkin’s Goal Drought

from Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post,

California hasn’t been kind to the Washington Capitals this week, and it’s been particularly cruel to captain Alex Ovechkin. On Sunday, he launched four shots at goaltender Jonathan Bernier, but for a 10th straight game, Ovechkin didn’t score as the Capitals fell to the Ducks, 5-2.

That marks a career-long drought for Ovechkin, and the Capitals’ struggles — a season-worst four-game losing streak — have highlighted his own. It’s been 18 games since he’s scored an even-strength goal, and he has just two points in past nine games. His recent play has improved, but the score sheet has still eluded him.

“A little bit frustrating because the puck don’t go in,” Ovechkin said. “You just maybe wait something happen going to be, a miracle or something. You just have to work harder and fight through it.”

So how does Ovechkin, a veteran of 907 games and 1,022 points, manage this new feeling of being unable to score?

“You know, I’m not a rookie anymore,” Ovechkin said. “I don’t think about, ‘Do I have to score every game?’ Of course, I wanted to. If you look at the chances we don’t have, it’s all about me. The guys give me really good plays, and I just have to put it in. One goal and it’s turned around in a different way.”

A Little Dry Spell For Alex Ovechkin?

from  Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post,

Ovechkin entered the season with a streak of recording at least one shot on goal in every game since March 2013, and that came to an end earlier this month against the Detroit Red Wings. After going 315 straight games with at least one shot, he’s been held without one in three of his past seven games. Ovechkin has been shotless in a game just nine times in his career.

Ovechkin leads the team with 27 goals in 61 games this season, but is averaging the fewest shots per game (3.66) of his career, which continues to hint that the 31-year-old might be slowing down in his 12th season.

“Obviously, he’s a shooter; he’s got to get pucks to the net,” Coach Barry Trotz said after the game. ” … He’s a little off, a little bit off. Players will go through that. Ovi’s pretty streaky if you look in his past. It wouldn’t surprise me if he got 10 goals in the next five games. It’s how he operates. Sometimes, he’ll go a little bit flat there, so he’s just going through a little bit of a dry spell, I think.”

Fatima Al Ali’s big day with the Capitals

From NHL.com's Tom Gulitti:

Fatima Al Ali was shaking. The 27-year-old from Abu Dhabi had been through a whirlwind of excitement since arriving in Washington on Sunday. But here she was, sitting on the bench at Kettler Capitals Iceplex on Wednesday, watching Washington Capitals practice and waiting to get on the ice with them to show off her hockey skills.

Al Ali plays for the United Arab Emirates women's national team but she's relatively new to the game. She started playing six years ago. So, yes, she was nervous thinking about getting on the ice with her favorite NHL team and player, Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin.

"Everything," she said of the nerves she was feeling. "Heart beating, hands shaking, legs shaking."

But when Al Ali got on the ice and started stickhandling and passing the puck with the players, something interesting happened. They started talking to her like she was any other hockey player, asking about the sport in UAE, her experiences, about the stick she was using (it was borrowed from T.J. Oshie), and what kind of blade curve she prefers.

And, in that way, it felt like any other hockey practice.

"I was so nervous going on the ice, but once we started talking it just calmed down," Al Ali said. "We're just talking about hockey, something we all share, and something we all love."

Continued, and you can watch a video of Fatima's day below:

ESPN Asks, Why No Cup For Ovechkin?

Craig Custance: Certainly by no fault of his own. All he's done in his postseason career is put up 82 points in 84 career playoff games -- including 41 career playoff goals. He's been an absolute force at times in the postseason. I'm just not sure if you can win a Stanley Cup built around a winger or when he's your best player. The recent Stanley Cup winners have been led by franchise centermen -- Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Anze Kopitar, Patrice Bergeron. They usually have a premier No. 1 defenseman to go with them -- Kris Letang, Duncan Keith, Drew Doughty, Zdeno Chara. Now, with Evgeny Kuznetsov starting to come on to go with Nicklas Backstrom, the Washington Capitals might have the necessary strength down the middle to pull it off. If history has shown us anything, it's that Ovechkin can't do it on his own.

Pierre LeBrun: Craig nailed it. It's all about the position. It's the same argument as the Ovechkin vs. Carey Price debate we had Monday, as far as which player is more valuable to his team....
