A Three-Year Deal For Alex Galchenyuk In Montreal

MONTREAL - The Montreal Canadiens announced on Wednesday that they had agreed to terms with pending-restricted free agent forward Alex Galchenyuk on a new 3-year contract. The deal will run through the 2019-20 season.

The 23-year-old is entering his sixth campaign with the Canadiens. Last season, Galchenyuk played in 61 games, netting 17 goals and 27 assists for 44 points. Fifteen of those points were scored on the power play. He also suited up for all six games of the Habs' first-round series against the New York Rangers, contributing three assists and an even differential.

In 2015-16, Galchenyuk hit the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his career. The Milwaukee, WI native appeared in all 82 games that season, adding 26 assists. Lifetime, Galchenyuk has played 336 games and collected 89 goals and 115 assists for 204 career points.

It Will Be A Learning Process For Alex Galchenyuk

from Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe,

There is no denying Alex Galchenyuk’s touch with the puck. The 23-year-old is Montreal’s best player when he has the puck on his stick. It’s hard for opponents to take it off his blade. He can drive to the net and create his own chances, or he can distribute it for linemates to do their thing. The 6-foot-1-inch, 210-pound pivot has a good mix of physicality and skill, similar to Patrice Bergeron’s playing style.

But what makes Galchenyuk an inaccurate overall comparable to Bergeron is the former’s flickering presence without the puck compared with the latter’s. Bergeron is manic in his precise and smothering defensive approach. Galchenyuk, even with five seasons of NHL experience, is more in the scatterbrain category when it comes to own-zone play. Defensively, Galchenyuk has more in common with Ryan Spooner than Bergeron.

Now that he’s playing for Claude Julien, Galchenyuk will have no choice but to learn how to skate, think, and position himself without the puck.

Alex Galchenyuk Would Not Take The Advice From His Agent Igor Larionov

from Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette,

A report early Monday noted that Galchenyuk had fired agent Ian Pulver, the NHL Players Association executive who is Larionov’s partner in The Wills Sports Group.

“He didn’t fire me, he fired a Hall of Famer,” Pulver said from his office in Toronto.

Larionov said the breakup came down to a matter of Galchenyuk and his family not accepting his advice.

“Ian and I were trying to help him to become a good hockey player but, more importantly, to be a good human being,” Larionov said. “I would speak to him every day; I think I spent more time talking to him than talking to my wife.”

Galchenyuk expressed unhappiness over his ice time with the Canadiens and being benched by coach Michel Therrien in some situations.

“I tried to make him understand that he has to be patient,” Larionov said. “I had to wait when I was a young player; every great player has a time when he’s going to be on the bench, but you have to learn that’s part of the game.”

Alex Galchenyuk Should Have Been Given A Penalty, Not A Goal

from Kerry Fraser of TSN,

Alex Galchenyuk had only touched the ice with one skate after exiting the penalty box and therefore was not deemed legally on the ice when he stole the puck off the stick of Nathan MacKinnon.

By the letter of the law Alex Galchenyuk should have received an additional minor penalty for interference (56.2) and no goal would have resulted in what turned out to be a 3-2 Montreal victory in regulation time.

Two rules reference this play in determining when a player is deemed to be legally on the ice from either the players' bench or penalty box. First, 56.2 states that a minor penalty shall be imposed on any identifiable player on the players' bench or penalty bench who, by means of his stick or his body, interferes with the movements of the puck or any opponent on the ice during the progress of the play. In addition, should a player about to come onto the ice, play the puck while one or both skates are still on the players' or penalty bench, a minor penalty for interference shall be assessed.
