Avalanche Will Raise #52 To The Rafters

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the organization will retire the number 52 in honor of former Avalanche defenseman Adam Foote.  The Avalanche will raise Foote’s No. 52 to the rafters at Pepsi Center during the 2013-14 season, game and date to be announced this summer.

Foote’s No. 52 will be the fifth sweater number retired in the 18-year history of the Colorado Avalanche, joining Joe Sakic (19), Peter Forsberg (21), Patrick Roy (33) and Ray Bourque (77).

Foote Announces Retirement—Final Game on Sunday

DENVER – Colorado Avalanche captain Adam Foote announced today that he is retiring from the game of hockey at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season.  Foote is expected to play his final NHL game this Sunday afternoon against the Edmonton Oilers at Pepsi Center.

“Like every boy’s dream growing up in Canada, my goal was to play one game in the National Hockey League,” said Foote.  “After 20 years and over 1,000 games, I feel fortunate to be a part of this great game for so long.”

Foote, 39, is wrapping up his 19th season in the NHL, his 17th with the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise.  He was a member of Colorado’s 1996 and 2001 Stanley Cup championship teams and helped the franchise capture an NHL-record nine consecutive division titles from 1995 to 2003.  Originally selected by Quebec in the second round (22nd overall) of the 1989 Entry Draft, Foote has appeared in more regular season (966) and playoff games (170) than any other defenseman in franchise history.

Avs Re-Sign Foote

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed captain Adam Foote to a one-year contract for the upcoming 2010-11 season.

“Adam’s veteran leadership has been and will continue to be a big part of our success,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “He provided stability last season and set an example for our young players right from the start of training camp. We are pleased to have our captain back for another year.”

“This organization is definitely heading in the right direction and I am excited to be a part of it,” said Foote.  “Having a young group like we did last year come together and compete at a high level was very special.  We’re looking to carry that momentum into next season.”

Foote, who turns 39 on July 10, will be embarking on his 19th season in the NHL, his 17th with the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise.  Foote has played in 1,107 career games, tallying 300 points (66g/234a) and 1,501 penalty minutes.  The veteran blueliner is a combined +108 throughout his career.  Foote has also appeared in 170 career playoff games and was a member of Colorado’s 1996 and 2001 Stanley Cup championship teams.

Foote Finally Back In Columbus

from Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,

For almost two years since Adam Foote walked out on the Blue Jackets at the NHL trade deadline, fans have waited for the former captain to walk back into Nationwide Arena.

Foote missed both trips to Columbus last season with the Colorado Avalanche because of an injured triceps, but he’s expected to be in uniform for a game tonight.

“I’ll be ready for whatever,” Foote said, when asked what kind of crowd reaction he expected. “It’s a business. The (Blue Jackets) have moved on, and I’ve moved on. I had a great time when I was here. I got to see a young team changing.

“I’ve moved onto something else, and they’re still going forward, which is good for them and the fans.”

The story of Foote’s departure has become part of Blue Jackets’ lore.

Foote Opens His Home To Duchene

from Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post,

In his 18th NHL season, Avalanche captain Adam Foote finally brought back a gift from a road trip that really pleased his kids: Avs rookie Matt Duchene, who immediately became the household’s No. 1 scoring threat in mini-sticks hockey.

Hey, this new addition to the family is better than a puppy.

“We adopted one, eh?” said Foote, who recently acquired the prized 18-year-old draft pick to live with two sports-loving young boys whom he and his wife already had at the kitchen table.

How’s it working out so far?

Well, Foote came home after work and discovered his favorite cushy seat had been claimed by a teenager on the very first night Duchene moved in.

“He’s sitting in my spot on the couch, which I wasn’t too happy about,” Foote said with a chuckle. “But we’ll figure it out.”

Avs Name Foote Captain

DENVER – The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that defenseman Adam Foote has been named team captain for the 2009-10 season.

“I’m honored to be named Avalanche captain,” said Foote. “I’ve been with this franchise for the majority of my career and I know what the standards are here. I look forward to the challenge of leading this team, starting with training camp and heading into the regular season.”

Foote’s Days In Denver Are Numbered

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

Whatever Foote is, he’s not naive. His days here are numbered, and the first team that demonstrates a willingness to take on his contract, whether that’s for the entire season or near the trading deadline, likely can get him for any offer than isn’t a complete embarrassment. (And maybe even for one that is.) The chances of Foote returning for 2010-11, even if he doesn’t retire, are minuscule.

That’s how the scorched-earth approach works.

The uncertainty is one reason Foote probably won’t succeed Sakic as the Avalanche captain this season, although he and Milan Hejduk would be the best short-term choices. Instead, the nod probably will go to Paul Stastny, the 23-year-old center who would have to grow into the job.

Foote Wanted To Wins So He Left Columbus For Colorado

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

One reason veteran defenseman Adam Foote wanted out of Columbus was that he wanted to win, and in the NHL that means — at the very least — making the playoffs.

A little more than a year after he was traded back to the Avalanche from the Blue Jackets, Columbus is in the thick of a fight for its first postseason berth and Colorado is in last place in the Western Conference, destined to be done playing when the regular season ends April 12.

Oops.

“It’s tough,” Foote said Wednesday. “I don’t think anyone likes it. We have to keep trying to be better.

“You have to deal with it, and there are two ways to do it. You can mope around or keep working hard.”

Foote Dealing With Playing For Last-Place Team

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

For the first time in Foote’s career with the Avalanche, the bigger names probably will be leaving Denver. Foote, of course, isn’t giving up on this season just yet. There is a game tonight in Newark, N.J., against the Devils, and Foote said he expects a victory. But, yes, the rugged Avs stalwart says, this is a new experience for him as an Av, playing on a last-place team with the calendar nearing March.

“This isn’t fun. But it reveals character. It really does,” Foote said. “You just try to stay focused, stay positive, keep plugging away.”

Trade rumors are flying and will continue to until deadline day. The Avs may be considering trading Jordan Leopold, Ruslan Salei, Brett Clark, Ian Laperriere, Darcy Tucker, Marek Svatos and perhaps even Ryan Smyth.

Foote Ready To Join Avs Lineup

from Craig Stancher of ColoradoAvalanche.com,

Defenseman Adam Foote will accompany his teammates on their trip to Detroit and could be available for Sunday’s game against the Red Wings. Following Saturday’s practice at Family Sports Center, Foote proclaimed himself, “ready to go.”

“It’s been awhile,” said Foote, who also mentioned the level of frustration that comes with being sidelined. “There always is when you’re injured, whether your team is winning or going through a lull. That will never change.

“The last couple of games we played with a lot of energy and we deserved better. We didn’t get the two points, but we have to stick with that same game plan.”

According To Sources

from Terry Frei of the Denver Post,

Reports out of Columbus have said Foote not only threatened to be a bad teammate and not have his heart in it if he stayed with the Blue Jackets, but he had a plane set up to take him to his reunion with the Avalanche, even before the deadline deal was consummated….

Those who made charges about Foote while insisting on anonymity are gutless. This isn’t “a State Department official,” with tacit approval from above, discussing Mideast policy with the media. Neither is this something as benign as “sources” disclosing that the Jackets are set to hire John Doe as an assistant coach; this is “sources” making reputation-damaging allegations.

Granted, hockey journalism often doesn’t set the bar high for “sourcing.” A “source” can be not just a league or team official, but also an assistant trainer’s brother-in-law’s barber . . . or a dart board. I’m not saying it’s that bad in the Foote imbroglio, but the use of unnamed sources, likely with axes grinding, for much of the material undercuts the credibility.

Foote Out Indefinitely With Tricep Injury

via Craig Stancher at ColoradoAvalance.com,

The Avalanche will be without a pair of veterans when the club faces Nashville tomorrow, as defenseman Adam Foote and forward Ian Laperriere will not make the trip to Tennessee.

Foote suffered a tricep injury during Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Wild. The blueliner played briefly in the second period before leaving the game. He did not take part in practice Monday and is out indefinitely.

The Avalanche also played the third period of last night’s game without the services of Laperriere. The winger, who has been playing center of late, skated for just 9:03 before leaving the contest with a back injury.

“Adam has a tricep injury and he’s going to be reevaluated in the next few days,” said Avalanche head coach Tony Granato. “Ian should be day-to-day. He’s got a stiff back but won’t make the trip.”

Sakic & Foote Hurting, Season May Be Over For Avs

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

The news isn’t good from the Avalanche’s morning skate: Sakic won’t play tonight against Tampa Bay, and his status is now listed as “indefinite.” We could be in the throes of a sad end to No. 19’s brilliant career. One last “clean” in the weight room - one last clean that he said he wasn’t even going to do, but said he did anyway in a kind of “what the heck?” manner - has hijacked Sakic’s and the Avs’ season….

It’s not a good situation, and this, I believe, will sink this listing Avs team for good this year. This team just doesn’t believe in itself, doesn’t have enough passion and - from what I have witnessed - doesn’t have the close kind of chemistry of the last few teams….

Here’s the other news from the skate: Adam Foote has been placed on injured reserve, retroactive to Nov. 22. Former DU defenseman Aaron MacKenzie has been recalled from Lake Erie and will be available tonight (although probably won’t be in the lineup).

Foote’s upper back (neck) is still bothering him, and this mysterious knee injury has also crept into the situation. Injuries like these are what can happen when a

stiff, no-talent, cheap-shot artist

forward like John Zeiler runs you from behind.

Zeiler Suspended

TORONTO (November 24, 2008) – Los Angeles Kings forward John Zeiler has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of a boarding incident that took place during NHL Game #295, Nov. 22 against the Colorado Avalanche, the National Hockey League announced.

Zeiler was assessed a major penalty for boarding and game misconduct for hitting Colorado defenseman Adam Foote at 6:51 of the second period.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Zeiler will forfeit $8,770.17. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Total Cheap Shot

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,

Total cheap shot by (John) Zeiler. (Adam) Foote is going to play a puck with Zeiler chasing, and Zeiler throws his right arm and shoves Foote’s head into the boards from behind.

Lappy just challenged Zeiler to drop them and fight, and Zeiler wants no part of it!

(After a few minutes)…They’ve tossed Zeiler from the game, giving him 5 for boarding and a game-misconduct. Probably a smart thing by the referees, although it’s not going to make Lappy happy wanting his pound of flesh in revenge.

Zeiler can definitely count on a suspension by the NHL for this - probably something very severe I bet. The NHL has been taking a lot of heat for the amount of head shots and hits from behind - and now Zeiler lays one of the dirtier hits of this or any other season on Foote.

Afternoon Line

I come here and act like a child, and I’m going home and I’m telling my kids not to do what I actually did all day — goof around.

“I’m saying, ‘Get in the shower!’ ‘You have to go to bed!’ All I do here is act like they do at home, but that’s what I love about the game. We just act like kids all day long. It’s still fun.”

From Rick Sadowski at the Rocky Mountain News,

Foote and Sauer will be eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1.

In other not-particularly-fascinating-but-still-suggestive Avalanche news, Adrian Dater mentioned (in his Denver Post blog yesterday) that Joe Sakic has recently been spotted in a local gym. He added this note:

Two Different Styles

from Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated,

The personalities in this odd coupling could not be more different. Zetterberg, 27, has his own website, complete with his own merchandising line—henrikzetterberg.com is promoted on the Joe Louis Arena scoreboard during the second intermission—while Foote is old school enough to assume MySpace is the area between the face-off dot and the front of his own net. Zetterberg has a Google-able girlfriend, Emma Andersson, who is a pop singer/model/TV host/winner of the Swedish version of Survivor, while Foote has a wife, Jennifer, and two sons. Zetterberg has a GQ face, now adorned by a russet-tinted playoff beard, while Foote’s mogul course of a nose and lived-in features look like something out of a 19th-century daguerreotype.

All Foote

from the National Post,

Prior to Game 3 in Colorado, the 36-year-old spoke to the Post about the Avalanche-Red Wings rivalry, the lack of original nicknames in the NHL, and possibly replacing Mark Messier as the new spokesman for Lays potato chips.

National Post Is it different playing in Joe Louis Arena as a member of the Columbus Blue Jackets than as a Colorado Avalanche?

Adam Foote Yeah. [The Jackets] just didn’t have the history that [the Avalanche] had. That’s probably why. It seemed that both teams approached it the same way. [The Detroit-Colorado rivalry] was fun, it was exciting, it was intense. It was as close as you’re going to get to things like that without getting in trouble by the law. There was some pretty nasty stuff going on. It was a very intense series.

Foote Would Have Stayed In Columbus

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Teams make hard financial decisions all the time. I would never begrudge Howson the right to do that here. If the Jackets don’t want Foote at $4 million a year on a two-year deal, so be it.

Everyone moves on and they all live happily ever after.

But to pick up a newspaper or watch Hockey Night in Canada and read and hear an implication that Foote is a fraud who deviously orchestrated his own exit from Columbus, that he never had any intention of re-signing in Columbus, well, that is, at the very least, offside.

At worst, it’s character assassination.

much more

added 7:37pm, from Rob Oller at the Columbus Dispatch,

Just be thankful Foote’s departure didn’t destroy the team’s playoff chances. Honestly, trading him to the Avalanche actually could help the CBJ’s cause.

If true that Foote threatened to quit on his teammates if the franchise didn’t move him before last Tuesday’s trade deadline, then better to be rid of him than risk poisoning the dressing room with his pessimism. Especially during this period of unparalleled optimism.

More Foote Talk

from Adam Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch,

According to numerous NHL sources, Foote threatened to be “a bad teammate, a bad captain and a bad player” the rest of the season if he weren’t re-signed or traded to his preferred destination—the Colorado Avalanche, where his best NHL years were spent.

The Blue Jackets made a final plea, urging Foote to consider all that the Blue Jackets’ ownership group, the coaching staff and the fans had done for him the past three seasons.

Again, according to sources, he responded by saying that he “doesn’t owe anybody anything.”

Played By Foote

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

Thoughts that have remained dormant for years have worked to the front of my brain this week. Wisps of memory have emerged, unbidden, and they’re telling me that we’ve all been played by Adam Foote, that he is not the leader of men that he purported to be, and not just because he quit the Blue Jackets….

Lesson No. 1: Foote said he put his Dublin house on the market last summer because he wanted to “downsize.” What he didn’t say was he was hunting for a smaller house in the greater Denver area.

Lesson No. 2: Foote professed shock that he was traded to the Colorado Avalanche—yet he rigged the game for just this outcome.

Here’s what we know:
