Voros No Avery

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

Can we please stop with the com parisons between Aaron Voros and Sean Avery? For better or worse, there are few similarities between the players beyond their shared willingness to go to the front of the net and absorb the punishment necessary to be effective in that hockey battle zone.

There are Rangers who celebrate the differences more than they celebrate the similarities, and that is surely their right. But be advised that Avery most certainly would not have been just another spectator in Washington, D.C., on Saturday when the Capitals made it their business to run Henrik Lundqvist and his teammates.

Renney Calls For Smith Suspsension

from Stan Fischler of Game On,

Also feeling his oats was Aaron Voros who battled Ryan Malone in another excellent toe-to-toe bout in the first period and later traded punches with Tampa’s belligerent goalie Mike Smith at 18:19 of the third. Voros also took an ankle chop from Smitty preceding the bout.

“I think he (Smith) should be suspended for that,” says Renney.

Eric Staal Appears OK After Hit From Behind

via Lord Stanley’s Blog at the News & Observer,

Eric Staal has apparently escaped a serious injury after he was hit head-first into the boards from behind by Aaron Voros.

With 14:01 to play in the game Voros ran Staal into the boards in front of the Minnesota bench from behind.

After lying on the ice in front of the Minnesota bench, Staal skated gingerly to the Carolina bench as a five-on-five brawl broke out on the ice. As the referees sorted out the mess, Staal could clearly be seen saying “I’m fine” to his teammates.

Voros, though, may be in trouble. He received a major penalty for boarding and likely faces a suspension from the NHL.

Voros Draws Comparison To Modano

from the Pioneer Press,

Aaron Voros is no Mike Modano.

If the light’s just right, though, Voros could almost pass for him.

Modano, the highest-scoring American-born player in National Hockey League history and a popular North Stars player during his early days in the NHL, is expected to be a focal point tonight when the Minnesota Wild play the Stars in Dallas….

The uncanny physical resemblance between the two was first given a name by journeyman defenseman Dan McGillis, who started calling Voros “Modo” when the two played in the New Jersey Devils’ system at Albany, N.Y., in 2005-06 and in Lowell, Mass., in 2006-07 before Voros was acquired by the Wild on March 1.
