The Potential Of Zherdev

from Sam Weinman of the Lower Hudson Journal,

Not only are they a diverse team based in a diverse city, but they are a franchise looking to maximize what they can get out of an explosive player such as Zherdev.

“Whatever those options are at the end of this year, we hope that we’re the No. 1 team on that list of options,” Renney said. “And that will only happen if he feels he’s had the opportunity to grow and assert himself.”

A spot with Gomez and Naslund would seem to be such an opportunity, and Zherdev took advantage yesterday by scoring the prettiest goal of the day’s scrimmage.

Morning Line

“For us, the question is, how’s the development going to go? Is it going to increase incrementally? Or are we going to suffer a setback at some point with these young guys? Based on the way we finished last year, you’d think we’re going to be right there. That’s certainly our objective this year, to win the division – and I think it’s a very realistic goal.”

The Streamlined Carey Price

from Dave Stubbs of the Montreal Gazette,

Price will be reporting to the Bell Centre Friday for his medical and fitness testing just a shadow of his 2008 springtime self, having shaved probably 20 pounds off his six-foot-three physique.

Gone is much of the baby fat he carried last season, then a 225-plus-pounder.

Robitaille Wants His Money Back

from Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star,

Painting himself as a victim, former Los Angeles Kings star Luc Robitaille has launched a lawsuit against a former minority owner of the Nashville Predators in an attempt to recoup the $2 million Robitaille says was fraudulently taken from him and left him unwittingly in debt to a bank.

In a court filing that is part of the bankruptcy proceedings for William (Boots) Del Biaggio, Robitaille says he was left owing a bank $2 million (all figures U.S.) after Del Biaggio misused a joint line of credit that had been intended for real estate deals.

Wings Have Too Many Players

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

“We got a lot of players battling for jobs,” coach Mike Babcock said. “I got 10 NHL defensemen, can’t have 10. I got a whole pile of NHL forwards, can’t have that; got three NHL goalies, can’t have that. So there’s going to be some real battles.”

The biggest battle is on defense, where one of four players—Andreas Lilja, Derek Meech, Kyle Quincey or Brett Lebda—is expected to be traded for a draft pick or prospect before the start of the regular season Oct. 9.

Evening Line

“It’s obviously a privilege to be part of such a prestigious organization and now be captain of it.  I am going to do my best. We have a lot of great team leaders right now on our team and we don’t have to change anything. I think that everyone really helps out around the dressing room. There are so many leaders that you just kind of have to do your own thing and more worry about yourself and help out where things are needed.”

Feature Improvements of the New KK

With the launch of the new Kukla’s Korner website design, I want to quickly point out a few of the new-and-improved features of the site:

  • KK’s new design is meant to be easy to navigate around.  Using the nav bar above, visit the Home page to see everything published on KK all in one handy spot, or go to Blogs to check out each blog individually.
  • One of our priorities has been to speed up page-loading time on the site, and that has been improved drastically—it’s now rendering about 30-50% faster than before.  This will allow readers to navigate from page to page much quicker than in the past.
  • Mobile device users will particularly benefit from the faster page loads, but also from the improved page rendering. Bottom line: the content you look for when you come to the KK site via your smartphone will now appear much higher on your screen, and much cleaner than in the past.
  • Appearance on iPhone:

Welcome KK Members & Guests

Welcome to the new look Kukla’s Korner.

I suggest you hover over the Blogs section on the black navbar near the top of the page.  You will notice a few more additions to KK and Alanah, Bill and I welcome them with open arms and wish them much success.

Feel free to take a tour around the blogs, click the areas in the navbar and as always, let us know what you think.

Feel free to leave a comment about the new look and KK members, don’t forget to upload your avatar too.  If you don’t like the look of avatars in the comment areas, go to your member profile and you can edit your preferences there.
We have removed the forum, but fear not, we have a better solution coming by the start of the regular season, which means, there is a phase II of the new Kukla’s Korner, so more to come!

I also want to personally thank Alanah for all of her hard work behind the scenes.  Organizing a new group of bloggers and setting up many of the pages on KK are not the easiest things to do, but she passed the test with flying colors.

Also, Kevin of Venn, our KK web designer, did a great job with the site and has hung an “Open for business”, sign in his window.

Out-of-the-Blue MVP

from Sam McCaig of the Hockey News,

Most teams have a star player who can take a run at the Hart Trophy as league MVP in any given year. But what about their supporting casts? Here is a rundown of potential MVP candidates who you may not see coming.

Boston
Patrice Bergeron could get more than a few sympathy votes if he comes back with a vengeance after a washout of a year last season when he missed 72 games due to concussion symptoms.

Buffalo
Two seasons ago, Maxim Afinogenov burst out of the gates and had people making Pavel Bure comparisons. Last year…not so much, after he scored just 10 goals in 56 games. He’s no Bure, but Afinogenov is much better than last season’s debacle.
