Ziegler Doing Just Fine

from Treasure Coast Newspapers,
Fourteen years after retiring as NHL commissioner, Sewall's Point resident John Ziegler can't help but think like a lawyer, a commissioner and a hockey fan. The 11-year Treasure Coast resident served as commissioner for 15 years before moving to Sewall's Point. And even amongst the Florida heat he still has a passion for the game on ice. During his stint as commissioner, Ziegler had to deal with the competing World Hockey Association. He did so by adding four WHA teams to the NHL for the 1979-80 season. Ziegler retired after a strike over a collective bargaining agreement led in 1992. "It just didn't have to happen like that," Ziegler said. "After that, I just felt it was a good to retire." For a career that lasted three times as long as he thought it would, Ziegler is pretty satisfied. "I don't regret my choice to stay commissioner for as long as I did," he said. "I was in the great position where my avocation became my vocation."
