Yzerman Says Goodbye To The Organization

from Mitch Albom of the Detroit Free Press,
“Can I come by the house?” Steve Yzerman asked….
He hung up and told his wife, Marian, that Steve was on his way. They had gone through this a few months earlier when, unbeknown to most people, Yzerman nearly accepted the Minnesota GM’s job. He had come by the house then, like a dutiful son, and Marian Ilitch was so broken up by the thought of Yzerman leaving she stayed in the back, crying.
This time she and Mike sat in the family room and listened (albeit, Ilitch admitted, with “teary eyes”). They listened to Yzerman thank them over and over. They listened to him say how much he had learned.
And they listened to him say farewell.
“Since he’s been 17 years old,” Ilitch said Tuesday, from home, voice catching. “I mean, talk about family. That’s legit family. But he’s 45 now and it’s time.”

LR, he was asked that yesterday and says just like with any organization, he would ask approval, etc., but does not plan to raid the Wings of the personnel.

Wonder if it would be fair game to bump draft prospects further up the list that he knows the Wings are high on?

That’s going to be the first “loyalty test”...Does Yzerman raid the Wings’ draft strategy based upon what he knows the Wings are looking for, or does he allow the Bolts’ scouts to do their jobs and pick players they feel are the best fit for the organization?

The two teams are going to be picking in positions that are different enough, that I’d think at least for the first few rounds, it makes sense for Tampa to stay “on the board” anyways.

Dave Andreychuk was on a Toronto sports station today and said Yzerman is on his way to the Draft combine today to meet the scouts and staff, but SY is planning on letting their (TB’s) scouts finish their work and not get in the way. Andreychuk seemed to imply that Steve would have some imput (obviously) but is willing to trust the guys they have scouting…

I had no idea that Adam Oates was on that staff in TBay.

Neither did I. That’s a great thing for that organization.
Still can’t believe we traded him.

For Bernie Federko no less. D’oh.

Can Wings fans safely say that was the worst trade in the Illitch/Develanno era? I’m reminded of it every so often and I have to pause. Did Federko and McKegney play 10 games combined?
Worst draft has to be Primeau over Jagr and Brodeur. Although, Murray can be blamed for that one ![]()

Anybody hear if Yzerman is taking some of the existing Wings brass with him to Tampa?
