Your Thoughts- Wings/Avs Outside?

from Adrian Dater of Sports Illustrated,

Can you picture this?

It’s 25 degrees outside on an early January night and the Detroit Red Wings are taking to the ice against the Colorado Avalanche under the silhouette of the Rocky Mountains. More than 76,000 fans are packed inside Sports Authority Field in Denver, including—brace yourselves—TIM TEBOW.

One of the greatest rivalries in sports history—not just the NHL—is revived for one day at least. And in case the current Avs and Wings wouldn’t be enough of an attraction, there is the alumni game to consider. Are you saying you wouldn’t tune in to see Claude Lemieux and Darren McCarty face off one more time? Or Patrick Roy against Mike Vernon? Adam Foote against Brendan Shanahan? Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg against Steve Yzerman and Sergei Fedorov?

Ten years ago, definitely?

Now?  Eh…  The Avs aren’t any good.  They’ve fallen too far off the map to be relevant in the NHL.  Likely to be the case next year as well.

Dater so badly wants his team to be relevant again.

An outdoor game needs to be played at “The Big House”.  Red Wings hosting Toronto at U. of M. football field.

Doc,  I definitely think that’d be entertaining, but you know how the NHL and NBC feel about keeping it all-American for ratings’ sake…

As a transplant in Denver, I gotta say the idea of Wings-Avs in Colorado is pretty interesting (though if you’re going to do it, why would you do it in Denver instead of Summit County or Vail or somewhere, ya know, in the mountains?).

That said, um, THIS:

I’d obviously watch it, but honestly, who cares other than Wings and Avs fans? The “rivalry” doesn’t carry any weight with the fans that don’t root for those two teams like it did through the mid ‘00s.

No.  Wings/Leafs (or Habs).  At the Big House.

Depending on Crosby’s return (and to be clear, I am hoping he does return soon at full health), I see the Pens getting an outdoor game before Detroit.

The Avs aren’t an east coast team named WASH,PITT,NY,PHIL,,etc. As long as NBC runs the nhl, we’ll see the same 6 team rotation for the winter classic.
