Your Thoughts On The NHL Playing Preseason Games In China

from NHL.com,

The NHL hopes to announce preseason games in China for next season soon, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said Thursday.

"We hope to be in a position to announce the game earlier than we have in prior years, coming up in the next couple of months," Daly said during the NHL European Player Media Tour in Stockholm. "Hopefully we continue to develop and deepen our ties in China, and that means more games, more players, more teams, more League activities in China."

The NHL will not be sending teams to China this fall because of logistical issues with booking arenas. The NHL had two preseason games in China each of the past two seasons.

I think it makes zero difference.  A January NFL game played in Green Bay versus Miami - yeah, there’s a difference there in where the game is played.  But hockey is played in a contained environment.  If they played it outdoors in China, that would make it interesting.  But it’s going to just be another game for the majority of viewers.

I feel the same way for all the European preseason games.

I kinda understand the NHL wanting to extend its reach into the most populated country on Earth. But you know they’re going to do these preseason games, and whatever hype and goodwill they generate, they’ll flush down the commode by not sending NHL players to the Beijing Olympics.

I know they want to grow the brand and attract people in places where hockey isn’t really on the radar to the game. The exposure could eventually lead to places like China becoming a regular contender on the world stage. Good luck to the teams playing this year in China, and good luck to the league exposing China to the game.

It makes zero sense to me for the league to push goodwill through preseason games and then keep there players from playing there in the Olympics. Just commit to the Olympics and consider it cost of wanting to expand your business.

The NHL should have a long-term strategic plan for Asia if it truly wants to grow the game. It missed an opportunity in S. Korea. It shouldn’t do the same with China.
