Scott Stevens and Adam Oates will both be coaching the Devils for the remainder of the season, general manager Lou Lamoriello announced this morning.
Lamoriello also will be going back behind the Devils' bench for a short term to help run the team.
Stevens, the former Devils captain and Hall of Fame defenseman, will coach the defensemen and Oates will run the forwards to help replace Pete DeBoer, who was fired Friday.
The Devils are 12-17-7 and nine points out of a playoff spot as they head into tonight’s game against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden – both teams’ first game following the NHL’s three-day Christmas break.
Lamoriello admitted it was a "unique" situauton to have co-coaches, but felt it would not be "fair" to have one person to coach the team the rest of the season. Lamoriello said the intention is to hire one head coach for the start of the 2015-16 season. He said it could be Stevens or Oates or someone else.
