NEW YORK (May 2, 2018) – Vancouver Canucks forwards Daniel& Henrik Sedin, Nashville Predatorsdefenseman P.K. Subban and Minnesota Wild forward Jason Zucker are the finalists for the 2017-18 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is awarded “to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community," the National Hockey League announced today.

The winner will be selected by a committee of senior NHL executives led by Commissioner Gary Bettman and Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. The King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner will receive a $40,000 donation from the National Hockey League Foundation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice and the two runners-up will each receive a $5,000 donation from the National Hockey League Foundation to benefit a charity or charities of their choice.

Following are the finalists for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, in alphabetical order:

Daniel & Henrik Sedin, Vancouver Canucks

The Sedins finished their legendary playing careers last month after 17 NHL seasons with the Canucks and their impact off the ice will be remembered with equal reverence in Vancouver. Their strong connection with their community includes a $1.5 million donation the Sedins and their spouses made to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation in 2010 to help build a new children's hospital and expand existing medical services. They have helped the Canucks for Kids Fund raise $42 million since 2000-01, advocated for the literacy promotion programs of the Canucks Family Education Centre and supported the SPCA. The twins enabled thousands of deserving kids to attend Canucks games and touched the lives of thousands more by visiting elementary schools, meeting with patients and families at BC Children’s Hospital and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, and through their work with the Sedin Family Foundation.

P.K. Subban, Nashville Predators

Subban is the founder of Blueline Buddies, a program that uses hockey to bring down barriers between police and local youth. At every home game, Subban brings together a member of the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) and guest with an underprivileged youth and mentor from a local organization. The Predators defenseman supplies the tickets and dinner and meets with the group before and after the game, helping to forge relationships that hopefully continue long after the group has departed the arena. Last month, MNPD honored Subban with the Department's Community Service Award. Subban also continues his work in support of the Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation, for which he has pledged to donate $10 million; The Robbie Foundation; Toronto SickKids Hospital; DAREarts; Man Dodo Foundation for Haiti and the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.

Jason Zucker, Minnesota Wild

Zucker and his wife, Carly, began a campaign in 2017-18 to raise funds for the Zucker Family Suite and Broadcast Studio at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, growing out of the couple's special relationship with the hospital and its patients. The space will allow children and their families to watch Wild games in a setting that simulates the experience of being at the game itself. It also will serve as a state-of-the-art broadcast studio. The Zuckers kickstarted the project by donating $160,000, and then continued their push by encouraging others in the community to donate in forms of 16 -- Jason's jersey number -- to the #GIVE16 campaign. In addition, Jason pledged $1,600 every time he scored a goal this season. He finished the season with a career-high 33 goals. In seven months, the #GIVE16 campaign has raised over $900,000. Jason also lends support to Minnesota causes including Avenues for Homeless Youth, Secondhand Houndsand Coco's Heart animal rescues, Minnesota Police Department first responders, and the Go Red for Womencampaign.

The NHL Foundation Player Award is being discontinued, and the associated NHL Foundation charitable donation will be provided through the King Clancy Memorial Trophy. From the NHL Foundation Player Award's inception in 1998 through 2017, the National Hockey League and NHL Foundation have donated $500,000 to charities selected by the award's recipients.

History

The trophy was presented in 1988 by the National Hockey League Board of Governors in honor of Frank "King" Clancy, a beloved figure in the NHL for decades as a player, referee, coach, manager and goodwill ambassador. A three-time Stanley Cup champion and 1958 inductee to the Hockey Hall of Fame, Clancy was voted as one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players during the League's Centennial Celebration in 2017.

Announcement Schedule

The three finalists for NHL Trophies are being announced by NBC Sports in the United States and Sportsnet/TVA Sports in Canada during pregame programming for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The series of announcements concludes in mid-May when the three finalists for the NHL General Manager of the Year will be unveiled. Voting for this award is conducted at the conclusion of the Second Round.
