Young Jets Come Out Flying

Anxious Winnipeggers couldn’t have asked for much more from their rookies and prospects at the Young Stars tournament in Penticton last night. All that was missing from the Jets’ near-perfect 4-0 victory over the San Jose Sharks prospects were the official uniforms (the team wore white modified practice jerseys).

First-round draft pick Mark Scheifele lived up to/exceeded expectations in his Jets debut, potting a beautiful shorthanded goal and setting up the third goal (by Winnipeg’s own Jason Gregoire) as well as playing a solid game in both ends of the rink. Levko Koper scored the first Jets goal in fifteen years early in the first period before firing the puck into an empty Sharks net late in the third. Edward Pasquale stopped everything the baby Sharks fired in his direction, stopping some prime chances as the Jets allowed him great sightlines and some strong backchecking in their own end. Heck, there were even a few scraps, albeit not much to write home about. First goal, first win, first fight - in the Jets’ return, there were many milestones achieved (if we’re counting a rookie/prospect pre-pre-season game) that few Jets fans that in attendance or watching online will soon forget.

The Jets prospects play again tonight against the Oilers rookie/prospect team, who are coming off a decisive 7-2 win over the young Canucks. The puck drops at 7:30 Pacific (9:30 Central) - we’ll see if the team can ice as solid an effort against Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and company as they did last night. To watch online click the link above.

Other quick notes:

- Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press reports that Dustin Byfuglien did pass a breathalyzer test in his boating incident last month, but was charged because he refused a urine test.
- The Free Press is also reporting David Aebischer, David Koci, Troy Bodie and Janne Pesonen have been invited to training camp. More here.
- The Jets helmets on the young stars included a ‘RR’ decal inside the Jets logo roundel to honour Rick Rypien. The decal will be included on Jets helmets throughout the 2011-2012 season.
