You Talking About The Edmonton Oilers Ron Hextall?

from David Staples of The Cult of Hockey at the Edmonton Journal,

At the press conference on Wednesday where Hextall was named the new Flyers GM, he was asked about his plan to build the team. Hextall made it clear the Flyers were a model franchise, used to winning, and he wasn’t going to be looking at tanking the team in order to get a high draft pick.

“There’s 30 teams out there and right now there’s a team out there  – I won’t mention any names — there’s a team out there just collecting number one picks right now.”

Uh, sorry Ron, you’re fooling no one.

Hextall continued: “Yeah, they’re going to be a pretty good team in three or four years, but ask their fans if they’ve had a fun last seven or eight years. The culture of winning is nothing to be embarrassed about. We should all be damn proud of this organization and how successful they’ve been.”

He tries to prove Hextall wrong “Doughty became a King because the team was terrible one year, got the second overall pick, and used it wisely.”

If Kings don’t trade for Carter and Richards they most likely don’t win the cup. This year they trade for Gáborík. You have to do more than just draft high you have to have a GM that is willing to make a trade too. Oilers don’t have a GM that can do anything but pick a guy from a list. The management in Edmonton don’t know how to make a trade.

While it is likely he is referring to Edmonton he could also be referring to the Islanders. At least Edmonton is trying to get there. As far as I can tell the Islanders are only appearing to try. Having to scrape up salary to reach the cap floor is a telling problem for any team.
