You Knew It Was Coming - The Stanley Cup For A Canadian Team

from Stephen Whyno of the CP at the Globe and Mail,

A Stanley Cup in Winnipeg, or Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal or Ottawa would be a benchmark for the league, as well. The longest drought before this one was seven years, between the Montreal Maroons’ victory in 1935 and the Maple Leafs’ in 1942.

The next Canadian team to win the 16 playoff games necessary to capture the Cup will make history.

“It would definitely be special to be that Canadian team that can come through and win the Cup,” Spezza said. “Canada deserves a Stanley Cup, so hopefully we can bring it.”

The continued myth that there is a desire among all Canadians that a team other than their personal favorite wins the Cup! To be honest I don’t think this desire actually exists for a majority of Canadians. I would bet that if you polled all Canadians, there is not a majority desire to see either Vancouver, Toronto or Montreal win the Cup. My guess is that general apathy would exist for Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Winnipeg, as they are relatively small towns and have no real identity. Its not like it is Team Canada winning the Gold Medal. Other than that the Cup spends more time in Canada in the Summer than any other country.

As long as articles like this continue to be written, I will always root for the Canadian teams to all be eliminated as early as possible.

Ahhh when it’s Canadians it’s “Nationalism”.  When it’s Americans it’s “hubris” or “jingoism”.

The double-standard lives!

Yes, we Americans are clearly the ones “butt-hurt”.  We’re the ones writing articles about when our next American team will win the Cu—oh right.  We don’t.  Because we don’t track such things, the only crap we give is if OUR team wins.
