You Can Feel The Change In New York

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

You don’t have to squint all that hard to read between the lines of the “Clean Slate…Grab it” motto the Rangers are wearing on their sleeves — and their training camp T-shirts — in order to deduce this fresh start everyone, but everyone, apparently craves is as close to an organizational repudiation of the John Tortorella Era as anything you’re ever going to get.

About the only way it would be more obvious is if the players had been issued licensed apparel bearing the phrase, “Ding Dong the Witch is dead.”

Seriously, it’s as if the Rangers couldn’t wait to rinse the taste of the last four-plus seasons out of their mouths, even though the club achieved a reasonable measure of progress and success under Tortorella, who took the baton from Tom Renney and advanced it, though he, like every coach other than Mike Keenan over the last 73 years, fell short of the finish line.

Tortorella wasn’t fired due to a lack of results. He was fired as a matter of style as much as substance.

I give Torts a lot more credit for what he did in TB than what he accomplished in NY.
All he did was inherit the worlds greatest goalie, smack-dab in the middle of his prime, and instruct his skaters to never cross the redline unless on the PP and block every shot taken.
In his five years with the blue shirts, he missed the playoffs once, lost in the first round twice, and made it to the conference finals once.

And considering the conference the Rangers play in, is it really hard to get into the postseason with perennial non-playoff teams such as Atlanta/Winnipeg, Carolina, Tampa Bay, NY Islanders, Buffalo, Florida and Toronto?

One could make a convincing argument that with the worlds best goalie, and with a solid lineup, he should have accomplished a lot more.

The game has changed. There’s a reason why Mike Keenan can’t get a job anymore.
The best coaches in the world are no longer loveless, swear-boxes who think throwing players under the bus gets the best results.
Torts will be gone from Vancouver in less than 3 seasons. And he won’t get the Canucks any closer to the Cup than they are now. Probably even less.
