Year End Media Availability With Peter Chiarellli

from Bruce McCurdy of the Edmonton Journal,

Strangely, Chairelli made no opening statement but jumped directly to questions...

On Milan Lucic
Confident that Milan Lucic can live up to his expectations next year. Likes his work ethic, reminds that he is “still young”.

On what has to change next year
Have to play to a higher pace, not just foot speed but thinking more quickly, moving the puck through all three zones more quickly. Parttly a personnel issue so as a manager he has to look at that. “Thinks our speed needs to start on the back end and moving the puck up quickly. Have some young forwards who can challenge for jobs who will bring speed. Generally wasn’t happy with execution, and that starts with passing. Criticized lack of support on thee breakout, neutral zone play and o-zone cycle.

Coaching staff
Lack of success on special teams was problems with execution. Made some tweaks on the penalty kill. Powerplay was disappointing this year. On the whole it was a challenge for the coaches. All are in a period of evaluation, including himself. “We are all under evaluation.”

“Re: Talbot starting 140 games the past two years, Oilers need to “manage that better”.”

Like having him start 0 next season.

Chiarelli said he’s open to trading EDM’s first this year for immediate roster help because he plans on making the playoffs next year.

There are a handful of teams that would/should greatly interest.  EDM’s 1st currently would rank 9th pre-lottery, so it’s looking like a good chance it’s a Top 10 pick.  That’s in range that someone could reasonably pick up an Oliver Wahlstrom, Noah Dobson, Ty Smith, Joel Farabee, Joe Veleno, Bode Wilde, etc, if it holds true.

As a Red Wings fan, I’d obviously like Holland on the phone with EDM for this (Nyquist?  Athanasiou’s rights?).  Realistically VAN and MTL should also be on the phone too.

With the Sedins retiring VAN desperately needs an infusion of extra talent, though I don’t know who they’d move to EDM (Eriksson?  Edler?) to make it happen.  VAN does NOT have any picks stockpiled already and that’s rather startling.  Their draft board is pretty bare considering their team’s state.

MTL has more assets than VAN but I don’t know if they’d be willing to give up any of them at this point.  MTL also has FOUR 2nd rounders this year to sweeten a pot though.  Toss one of those in with a good player and you’d have to imagine EDM would bite.

At any rate if Chiarelli is serious, he should have some takers.

If you’re an Oilers fan though, how confident would you be in Chiarelli wheelin and deelin considering how he’s made out in the past?

Their best bet might be to draft and lure FAs with the chance to play with McD in a new arena. Maybe, I dunno, they’re a bit of a mess.

I mean…. it’s not like their drafting inspires any confidence.  It’s pretty abysmal.

So, trading it shouldn’t be considered a bad alternative.

Yeah, that’s true.

Maybe they’re just banking on the lottery again this year.
