Wrong Agenda

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

...we have yet to see if Bettman will actually punish any of these owners for smashing the spirit of the current collective agreement to smithereens. That would be a lot tougher than pounding this sad-sack union one more time.

The NHLPA just got caught in the train tracks here as a group of influential owners pursued an outlaw agenda, specifically the likes of Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs, Philadelphia Flyers chairman Ed Snider and Detroit Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch.

You wouldn’t include New Jersey owner Jeff Vanderbeek in that influential group, at least not yet. But you would believe that Devils president and GM Lou Lamoriello would include himself as one of Bettman’s staunchest supporters.

Hey Damien… newsflash… Mike Illitch has never been a supporter of Lil’ Gary and never will be.  He believes in building an organization from the ground up… not in this new “rotisserie” NHL where a new team wins the Cup every year.  Excellence should be rewarded, not punished.

Anyone who knows anything about the NHL (and apparently Cox isn’t one of them) would never link Mr. I to a phrase like “outlaw agenda.” It’s ludicrous to the point of being slanderous.

Ilitch gave self-serving deals to Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.

Geez, this really gets old after a while. Of Hank’s 12-year contract and Mule’s 11-year contract, only the last two years are for less than $3.5M and $2.0M respectively. And those final two years are for $1M each, a figure the league’s new rules sanction for players who will be under 40 years old at the time (as both Hank and Mule will be).

So, try to follow along here, Mr. Cox. What the Red Wings did is no more “self-serving” than any legal contract in the league. And it doesn’t even come close to being part of an “outlaw agenda.”

What an idiot.

Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame on owners who actually want to win!  Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame on owners who use the rules to their advantage!  Shame!  Shame!  Why can’t they all be like the Toronto Maple Leafs and lose all the time and have Brian Burke running around like a madma…

Oh, wait, nevermind…

Further evidence that Cox is sounding and looking less and less relevant.

Journalists aren’t supposed to be allowed to write stuff like this. Where does Cox substantiate these claims? You can’t just throw this at the wall and see if it sticks.

Ilitch gave self-serving deals to Henrik Zetterberg and Johan Franzen.

Uh, you’re damn right he did. You don’t sign players because it’s “good for the league,” you sign players because it’s good for the [insert team name here]. This is basic and its necessary for a sports league to have on the ice/field/court integrity. Otherwise it’s just wrestling.

Furthermore, as has been mentioned, those contracts wouldn’t even violate the new provisions. Additionally, consider that unlike any other team in the league, the Wings have consistently had high level production from players between the age of 35 and 42 for the last 10+ seasons.

Please, Toronto Star, I’m begging you. Fire this jackass. He’s off the wagon and has lost all integrity. Every time you let this guy publish, it makes your rag look more and more like a tabloid.
