Would You Want Paul Holmgren As Your GM?

from Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun,

Give Paul Holmgren credit. He is nothing if not aggressive. In the past year and some, he has traded away Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, James van Riemsdyk and Sergei Bobrovsky; lost Matt Carle, Kris Versteeg and Ville Leino to free agency; signed Jaromir Jagr (then lost him), Ilya Bryzgalov and Max Talbot as free agents; traded for Jakub Voracek, Wayne Simmonds, Luke Schenn, and an early first-round pick, lost Chris Pronger to concussion and signed Weber to a monster free-agent contract that may or may not work out in his favour. Wouldn’t every fan in hockey want a GM so unafraid of making big, bold moves?

As a Flyers fan I love it.  Homer deserves a lot of credit, but at the same time I’m sure these are things most GM’s would love to try to pull off, but not every GM has the green light from ownership to do “whatever it takes” like Homer does.

Yes for sure.  Burke is wearing on me.  He is too meek to be the GM of the leafs.
Homer would be a much better GM for this team. Burke would do fine for a small market team but for the leafs he is out of his element.

Of course I would he is exc.. Wait he already is. Just when you want to hate the guy for not trying to line up Parenteau and Allen, wasting time on Suter and Parise the guy comes out of left field with a straight uppercut that put the Red Wings and Rangers out of the race for Weber. Genius.

Nope he isn’t a Flyer yet, and if it costs us Couts or Schenn, I hope he isn’t but that no other teams can try a move this year is brilliant. And for all of those (mostly Pens fans) that say. “no one wants to sign there”.. Hmm.. guess Weber signing a sheet, Doan touring today, Nash saying we are on his top 5, and Ryan saying that Philly is his team of choice if he could move may prove naysayers wrong. But it’s all good.. Future UFA’s will see Holmgren as a guy with the stones willing to set his team, fans and owners up for the best success he can. Holland,Shero, Sather, Poile.. This is how it’s done.

When his team wins a cup, we can talk about it.

To follow up the previous post,  There has been a lot of local buzz about Doan being in town today..

Yes Holmgren is great, but there is more structure in place than just the GM, to support the second best all time NHL winning percentage (since 67, and second to Montreal).

I am not sure he has any concept of how to build a team. He is all about blowing things up before he knows if it will work. He doesn’t appear to have a philosophy other than going after the latest star on the horizon, only to find out they are over rated.

Let’s see, Gagne, Carter and Richards all get sent out of Philly, and they win a Cup. He makes the Pronger deal, that fails, makes the Bryzgalov deal. that fails, and now wants to over pay for Weber. That means, bye bye Hartnell and Timonen after this year. Not to mention all the picks he would lose for the offer sheet. And strapping them to the cap if an injury pops up at the deadline. He has never won anything as a GM. The only thing that attracts UFA’s to philly is their willingness to way overpay. Players go to cash in, not win cups. Modern players are way to fragile to give super long term deals. This is just my opinion, but untill you hoist a cup, you ain’t done crap.

I’m not a Flyers fan by any means but last year after they made their big trades I went to this site and walked through each season going back to 08 (he took over the GM spot from Bobby Clark during the 06-07 season):

When you consider how aggressive Holmgren has been in light of how Jeff Carter destroyed the locker room for two seasons; how the Pronger addition and the emergence of Giroux changed the leadership line; what Pronger’s injury did to the face of the defence and what was gained following the Richards and Carter trades in terms of above average proven NHL talent < 25 years of age, you have to give the guy credit for continuously fielding one of the better teams in the league over the last five seasons. He’s crafted rosters that have a cup finals appearance and a conference finals appearance since he took over, and they’ll be in the mix once again this fall.

As a player? Hell no. Look what he did to Carter.

As a fan…could be much worse, but for every smart move, he seems to make a moronic one.

Turned Carter into a younger player with, probably, as much or more upside than Carter ever had, plus Jacob Voracek.

On the other hand he turned Richards, who’s a five-tool, borderline impact player into a pretty good grinder and a guy whose only immediate contribution to the team was KOs and goals against.

Signed an average goalie for a King’s ransom then gets Grossman for a song.

Sorted out a good way under the salary cap system to get UFAs before they go UFA (hartnell, timonen).

Then lost a good defenseman because he didn’t understand how the CBA worked (sbisa).

Lotta mixed results with this guy. Sometimes I wonder if he does things just to do them. He’s got ADD or something.

@Penguinsjuice. Couturier has a Jason Vorhees mask.. You scared? Malkin is… Just kidding. You Pens fans are funny, irrelivant like your team against the Flyers, but funny. Just kidden.. You guys are great. Not doing anything to shore up that leaky D, but great. Shero didn’t need Weber, you guys are set.. Looked good in the playoffs too. You won the Cup in 2009, you don’t need to do anything to get the Cup again. Your a dynasty.. Just kidden, you guys are so fun.

Anyway. People hate the Flyers regardless what they do so its fruitless to try and explain how relivent they have been as a franchise since the 80’s. That pesky Stanley Cup keeps getting away while dynasties like the Penguins swoop in and take it for a year then remind the rest of the NHL they have the best player ever.

Keep on hating them.. They will be around for a long time. And if you agree or disagree with Holgrens moves you secretly wish your GM would get off his ass and try to sign the best there is out there regardless interpretation or perspective. Don’t know.. But I do know that if you don’t like Crosby you are jealous that he isn’t on your team even though he’s only good for 35 games a year.  Those crazy Pens fans..

Yeah. That Weber guy is so overrated. How could anyone pay 7.8 million for a Dman that a 2 time Norris nominee. He dholes have signed that Carle guy, that Quincey guy, that Garrison guy, that Green guy, they are much better then Weber. He’s too overrated.

@Me from There               Ha, the best thing that could happen to Pens fans was our last cup. It trumps in all are battles in blogs, forums and message boards against flyer fans. Just think of how much ammo you would have if the Pens lost 2 in a row to the dirty wings. But lets see Weber without an all star partner and real pressure to win, remember when Phaneuf put up 2 good years, when Green, Bouwmeester put up good years. Now they are all overpaid and stink. D-man are a big gamble.

@PenguinsJuice. I for one do not care who won the Cup last. 2009 is only better the 1975 when it’s still 2009, at least in my mind. You guys win this year then yes I will now down to your teams superiority until the next season.. Then who cares?  God forbid the Flyers ever win in the next decade.. The punishment doled out to the Pens will be excruciating. And don’t let the Pend miss the playoffs with the “best 2 players in the world”... My god you will be buried. But it’s fun having one of the most heated rivalries. I like going back and forth with those fans that can put 2 and 2 together and predate the Crosby years. The bandwagonners since and the “2009” skipping mantra.. Well I guess if that’s a you can bring to the table.. You have something.

  Those darn Pens fans.

Will tell you what though.. I like facing the Pens before the Rangers. You guys are kinda a scrimmage game before they kill us. So thanks for the confidence.

Only a Flyers fan would make fun of a team not having a dynasty.  Or a teams star having a concussion.  Neither the Pens or Flyers played playoff hockey, but keep telling yourself the Philly is close

Posted by pens fan in baltimore on 07/22/12 at 03:59 PM ET

Yeah, Pens fans didn’t comment about Prongers concussions, saying he deserved it and we’re happy he wasn’t playing in the playoffs or the NHL. Yeah I never read that. Hypocrits. You want it one way then expect the others not to do the same. Typical.

I’m not a fan of either team… still: “I for one do not care who won the Cup last. 2009 is only better the 1975 when it’s still 2009, at least in my mind. You guys win this year then yes I will now down to your teams superiority until the next season.. Then who cares?”

So… if you only care about the current year why bother discussing the moves made by the GM since in all those past years he didn’t win. Who cares what he did, it clearly doesn’t matter to you. Why bother having a discussion in the summer at all? Both teams clearly are equally bad since neither won the cup. Next year, we can’t tell yet, the games haven’t been played. Yeah… discussing the recent past? Totally meaningless. For sure.

Posted by clownfat on 07/22/12 at 08:24 PM ET

If your a Flyers fan I would think you love him.  He’s always wheeling and dealing.  I would have thought at some point players would be a little leary of signing there as there doesn’t seem to be much of a long term plan and it’s always crisis management.

What they did to Richards and Carter was in there best interest but they did not treat them right.  If there was an understanding they would not have been traded then they should have honored that.

Never the less, Flyers suck.  Go Pens!!
