With the NHL employing a salary cap for the first time in its history, it's more important than ever for teams to find overachieving players who don't consume too much cap room. his season's top defensive pairing — as far as bargains go — would be Ottawa's Brian Pothier and Carolina's Mike Commodore, while Montreal goalie Cristobal Huet ranked best when comparing his salary and statistics to other NHL netminders. The biggest regular-season busts this season included Los Angeles centre Jeremy Roenick, Edmonton right winger Georges Laraque and Anaheim left winger Jeff Friesen.
