Witt A Candidate For A Buy-Out

via Chris Botta of NYI Point Blank,
Garth Snow said last season they would not put Brendan Witt on waivers to make him available at half-price to teams. But even at $1.5 million, based on the market this summer for depth players, it’s unlikely a team would have taken the veteran defenseman’s tab. He was placed today on unconditional waivers.
A buyout is probably in his future. The Islanders still carry seven defensemen on one-way contracts for the 2010-11 season. If they buy out this last season of his contract, the Islanders could add the cost as they reach the salary cap floor.

So, the Isles have a player whose cap hit can be dodged by sending him to the minors, but whose salary is too much for them to afford in Bridgeport.
And the Rangers have a player whose cap hit can only be eliminated by trading him away, but who is on a salary lower than a Witt buyout would cost.
In what world does it make sense for NYI to buy out Witt, when sending him to the Rangers would save them money (at least $600k between a Witt buyout and Brashear’s salary), and make so much sense for the Rangers (who would basically be buying $1.4m cap space for $3m - not bad value considering how tight to the cap they are).
