Without Toews, The Blackhawks Could Be In Trouble

from Steve Ronsenbloom of the Chicago Tribune,

Even with Toews, the Hawks might not repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Without him, I can’t see them even beating Colorado in the first round.

The Hawks already had an issue at center, no matter what Stan Bowman thought. Without Toews, the Hawks would be a complete doughnut.

Perhaps Toews will come back for the playoffs, or perhaps earlier, but I’m not confident he’ll return in top form, not when an injury to his left arm or shoulder area easily could hamper everything from faceoffs to shooting.

Same goes for Patrick Kane, just substitute a knee hampering everything from his speed to his power-play talent to his world-class game of keepaway.

The Hawks already were playing badly without Kane. They look disorganized, their best players are making some of the worst mistakes, and they seem to have little confidence.

Now this.

We can hope Quenneville’s right. We can hope it’s not serious. Otherwise, it’s baseball season.

Poor poor hawks, losing their top two centers. I don’t know how bad a team would be without two top centers.

Speaking of the Hawks, Bourne just wrote a nice article:

I’m not glad that they are injured.  That is dickishness.  I find it odd, however, that so much attention is paid these injuries on the Hawks when the Wings have suffered the loss of D and Z and much more during long stretches of the season (which continues).

Boo hoo. Let’s all feel sorry for the Hawks because two high-scoring whiners are out. Try looking at who’s left, fer cripes sake.

1. Seabrook, Keith and Leddy have 12 more points than all of the guys who’ve played D for the Wings this year. As a group, the Hawks D is a +83. The Wings D is a -10.

2. Sharp, Hossa and Saad have 173 points. That’s more than Alfredsson, Franzen, Abdelkader, Sheahan, Helm, Andersson and Bertuzzi combined.

3. Their #1 goalie has played in 55 games and has a .918 SVG and a 2.21 GAA. The Wings #1 goalie has played in 47 games and has a .909 SVG and a 2.71 GAA.

If the Hawks can’t make it out of the first round this year, it won’t be because of the loss of two guys. It’ll be because of a lack of character. And that wouldn’t be surprising at all.

I don’t know what’s odd about the Chicago Tribune not paying attention to the Detroit Red Wings’ injuries.

There’s a home-town writer who drastically overstates the dangers to the home team in order to have a topic for a column?

I haven’t seen that before.
