“With The Last Pick Of The Draft”

Sometime after midnight tomorrow, after many NHL executives have already fled the draft floor at Vancouver's GM Place for hospitality suites or red-eye flights, the Carolina Hurricanes will announce the final, and 213th, pick in this year's entry draft. The name will mean little, even to many seasoned hockey observers; the odds that the newly-crowned Stanley Cup champs will unearth a gem are frightfully long. Instead Carolina will have more likely drafted a fire captain, a home inspector, a Zamboni driver or, even a future head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs — all jobs currently held by previous last overall draft picks.
