With Ebersol Gone, Olympics On NBC May Be Too

from Bruce Dowbiggin of the Globe and Mail,

The resignation of NBC Sports president Dick Ebersol raises serious questions about the network’s commitment to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia – and, by extension, the attendance of NHL players in those Games. Industry rumours said Ebersol was having trouble convincing the new owners of NBC and Comcast to shell out the significant money needed for Sochi after losing a considerable amount on the Vancouver Games in 2010. Matters reportedly came to a head Thursday morning, with Ebersol telling staffers he was gone.

It’s hard to see the NHL doing business on ABC or ESPN after signing its recent 10-year deal with the NBC and Comcast. The negotiations for the U.S. Olympic TV rights will be determined in June.

I know that Dowbiggin’s Captain Doom and Gloom, but I do worry about NBC’s commitment to the NHL without Ebersol.

Sochi’s a pretty shaky proposition in general—based on the 25-or-so ethnic groups with an axe to grind and two wars fought within a 150-mile radius of Sochi over the last ten years, I don’t think that any agent with a firm grasp of world history would encourage their client to attend—but the NHLPA will try to make it happen in terms of NHL participation and somebody has to cover the event.

The Russian government is so personally vested in having a good showing at Putin’s games (Putin’s summer home is in Sochi and he and the St. Petersburg KGB staffers who he brought to Moscow to run the government are hockey people, as is Dmitry Medvedev, and Alex Medvedev, Vladislav Tretiak and Slava Fetisov have close ties to the government, and Gazprom Export, the KHL’s biggest sponsor, is owned by the government) so I would imagine that the Russian government will do all it can to encourage American broadcasters to take part.
