Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Adrian Dater of All Things Avs,
While I still believe the Avs’ offer to O’Reilly is fair – five years at $17 million or $7 million over two years – Downie’s injury makes it more imperative that the Avs do something to make up for his loss. Yeah, maybe Kobasew and Malone light it up in place of Downie, but otherwise the Avs still have a problem now with depth at the forward spots. Adding your leading scorer from last season, a 21-year-old kid with leadership and talent, wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
The Avs can cling to principle all they want with O’Reilly, but when your hand is forced by things such as injuries, you can’t sit on principle forever. You have to do something to, you know, give yourselves the best chance to win hockey games. That might mean having to give in and pay a little more than you feel you should to a player.
