Winnipeg Jets Press Release:

The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation and Camp Manitou are pleased to announce they have entered into a long term lease and operating agreement that will see the foundation assume the operations of the camp effective January 2, 2014. Under the terms of the agreement, the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation will carry on existing Camp Manitou programming and bring additional programming to the facility beginning next summer. A search for a Camp Director will begin in the coming weeks. In addition, the charitable arm of the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club and True North Sports & Entertainment Limited has also committed to a significant improvement to all camp facilities.

“This as an incredible opportunity to combine Camp Manitou’s long term goals with the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation, to deliver more than just a greatly improved summer camp experience for youth at risk, but an improved Camp Manitou that will be fully utilized all year,” says Garry Hirsch, President of Camp Manitou. “The real winners here are the children, because together we have the opportunity to invite thousands more throughout the year.”

“We are thrilled with our new agreement that allows us to partner with Camp Manitou,” says Dwayne Green, Executive Director, Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation. “This opportunity allows us to extend our mandate and focus on youth in our province by developing a program that serves disadvantaged youth 12 months of the year.”

Camp Manitou, located in Headingley, MB, was founded in 1930 by the following six service clubs: Rotary Club of Winnipeg, Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg, Cosmopolitan Club of Winnipeg, Kiwanis Club of Winnipeg, Optimist Club of Winnipeg, and the YMCA. It was incorporated as a non-profit charitable organization in 1949 with the mission to provide an enriching camping experience for children and youth who would not otherwise have the opportunity or resources to do so.
