Wings Want To Extend Babcock’s Contract

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press at Kentucky.com,

The Red Wings are starting negotiations to get coach Mike Babcock signed to an extension.

He has a year left on the three-year deal he signed most recently, but the Wings have been so thrilled with the job 47-year-old Babcock has done - especially this past season - that extending him only makes sense.

“I’d like to keep him, so we’re going to sit down and talk,” general manager Ken Holland said Saturday at the 2010 NHL entry draft at Staples Center. “He likes it in Detroit, and I enjoy working with him. I think he’s done a tremendous job since he came here in 2005. I anticipate this is going to take most of the summer, but hopefully by the time we get to training camp, we’ve got something in place.”...

“I’m staying if they’d like to have me,” Babcock said. “But I haven’t really even thought about it - I just assumed I’m staying.”

I doubt that one out ten Wings fans would oppose extending Babbles’ contract for an additional three years…or more. He’s proven that he’s the best there is at getting the most out of both high-end and marginal players.

Really, Kenny? You really think it’ll take all summer to come to a number you both can agree on? Please. Give him whatever he’s asking for and sign the damn contract.

With the salary cap, Mr. I is making more than enough money to pay him whatever he wants. So just ask your boss to open his check book and sign Babbles now. Then all of you can get on with the important business of fitting Abbi, Eaves, Miller, Helm and Meech under the cap.

Your fellow elder Gramps (HTT) isn’t a big fan of Babbles. He wants Hitchcock or Trotz instead.

But yea, he’s insane so whatever.

Trotz isn’t going to be allowed out of Nashville until he wants out. That team knows he’s the best coach to get as much as possible out of a team with minimal talent due to a minimal budget.

I’m a huge Babcock supporter and even I think I’d take Trotz over Babcock.  I’d really like to see what he could do when given a team committed to winning.
