Wings Recall Brendan Smith

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings today announced that defenseman Brendan Smith, 22, has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL). Detroit has also placed veteran blue-liner Mike Commodore, 31, on the 7-day injured reserve list.

Smith can start serving his five game NHL suspension tonight.

this is a good move…

while he’s suspended in the AHL he can serve out his ban while commodore is injured so the wings don’t have to make a roster move..

i just wonder if this means his AHL suspension will be paused until he is returned there

No way it should be.  His AHL suspension clearly said he was ineligible until October 18th.  Whatever he does between now and then should not have any effect on that.

The timing of this is strange. Smith will get credit for one game tonight, but he won’t get another credit until next Thursday’s game. Then he’ll have to go back to G.R. before the Saturday game if Commodore comes off the 7-day IR list next Saturday morning.

I wonder why they didn’t bring Smith up before last night’s game? Seems like they lost sort of a “free” credit towards his suspension (unless Commodore has had a set-back that the Wings didn’t know about until today).

In Tick Tock we trust, but this is a weird one.

True, but I never question Ken Holland. Or Bruce Dickinson.

Unless Commodore isn’t ready to come back by then.  short-term IR is at least seven days, not exactly seven days.

I’m going to trust that Holland has a better grasp on this situation than any of us.  wink

He was sent down on the 2nd though, and didn’t all teams have have their rosters locked a few days ago?  Could be they didn’t know the extent of Commodore’s injury, and they didn’t expect the retarded AHL suspension to come down.

And hey, two games ins better than none.
