Wings Assistant Coach Decides To Pursue Other Career Opportunities

Detroit, MI... The Detroit Red Wings today announced that Assistant Coach Brad McCrimmon will not return to the club for next season.  McCrimmon’s contract expired at the conclusion of the 2010-11 season and the former Red Wing player and long-time NHL assistant has decided to pursue other career opportunities.

“I’d like to thank Brad for his dedication and tremendous work in serving as an assistant coach for the Red Wings,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Ken Holland.  “We wish Brad and his family all the best in their future endeavors.”

McCrimmon recently completed his third season as a member of the Wings’ coaching staff.  He has more than 29 years of NHL experience as a player and coach, including 18 as an NHL defenseman for six different teams.  He played three seasons in a Detroit uniform from 1990-1993 and finished his playing career with 1,222 games.  McCrimmon also served as an assistant coach for the Atlanta Thrashers (2003-2007), Calgary Flames (2000-2003) and NY Islanders (1997-98).

Ms. Redwings suggestion about Drapes makes more sense now..

I would feel bad, but who was it that posted the stats about the team with mccrimmon and with mcclellan??  Beast isn’t up to snuff anymore and our defense is getting worse and worse every year.  They probably already have a replacement lined up.. this could be what Kenny was talkin’ about when he said we need to find a way to win by 1 instead of lose by 1… When we’re giving up 3 or 4 goals a game…  we pretty much HAVE to score 4 goals to win a game.. that was how it was all season and that’s about how it was in the post season.. i’d say I was sad, but I think the Wings need a fresh start on defense

At long last, the clouds have parted.  Where is JJ?  I need to send that dude a high five through this post.

Pressure is on to find a stud special teams coach, wonder who the candidates will be.  Hopefully not Joe Kocur.

Man, I think the worst possible thing to do right now with a roster that should be playing this week is to give them a rookie assistant coach.  It’d be one thing if this was a young team that wasn’t a desirable place to be, but it’s another when you’re the Detroit Red Wings.

They should be gunning for the best possible established coach out there on the market.  I love Drapes, but he isn’t remotely close to being on that list.

Be careful what you wish for you might get it! Pens fans were ecstatic that Yeo went to be HC in the AHL & everybody thought the PP woes were over .............. NOT !! Bylsma PP was even worse

Absolutely agree with you, Evil.

The next move is a big one, they need to find a guy like Barry Smith who has a proven track record.  A guy like Woodcroft at SJ (who was the Wings coordinator) is an ideal example.

There was a drastic change in the Wings defense, with no change in personnel, his first year here.
I wanted him gone, long before losing the Cup to the Pens his first year.

The Wings should consider Cheli, before hiring from outside.

When the Sharks lose in the WCF finals, maybe Woodcroft comes back to the Wings.

Yep, the minute McClellan and Woodcroft left town the defense took a bath.  Let’s face it, Brad’s track record as an assistant hasn’t been stellar.  Virtually everywhere he’s gone the quality of play from said team has regressed.

I’m sure he’s a well respected hockey guy (Dreger tweeting he’ll be an HC I guess), but from a fan perspective all I can do is go off the numbers and the product that I see on the ice.  All of it has regressed with 85% of the same roster that had just won a cup.

Not enough room behind the bench for Hitch. Not to mention he’s probably looking for a HC job.

Regarding Hitch, he certainly is tight with Babs: http://www.jewelsfromthecrown.com/2010/9/17/1695675/i-love-this-so-much-hitchcock-asks

I agree with NYC, he certainly seems like he’s gunning for an HC job (at least, that’s where his name keeps getting mentioned in recent weeks).

My first thought too…. but if we could get HItch to come aboard all the better.
This is the best change we’ve made in awhile. Pretty sure I signed every “fire McCrimmon” petition A2Y passed around.

Mr. I? Give Hitch an unlimited supply of free pizza and crazy bread, and maybe, just maybe, he’ll agree to be an assistant.

Yes. Hiring from within is the best option. Cheli seems like he’d fit into the picture quite well.
Let’s face it, the 19 started calling for McCrimmon’s head aboot 1/2 way through his first season.

Buh-bye.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

This entire playoffs I’ve been ranting to my wife that I I wish we’d make some effort to prevent the opposing PP from entering our zone instead of welcoming them in without a fight.  Considering the speed of our PK’ers (Helm, Eaves, Draper), that’s not too much to ask!
