Wings May Have Interest In Wade Redden

from Helene St. James,

The Detroit Red Wings want to improve their defense and are looking at Wade Redden as a possible solution.

The decision is being discussed internally, especially with assistant coach Tom Renney, who coached Redden in 2008-09 with the New York Rangers.

The Rangers made a big splash signing Redden to a six-year, $39-million deal in 2008, but things got so sour after two seasons that Redden spent 2010-11 and '11-12 in the minors. The Rangers have until Saturday's start of the 2013 season to buy out his contract, which would give Redden, 35, a shot at finding a new employer.

The Wings have some interest in him, but that's likely to be matched by the dozen or so other NHL teams that need help on defense. Redden's assets are his size -- 6-feet-2, 205 pounds -- and an offensive touch that saw him reach 50 points in 2005-06 and follow up with two straight 36-or-more-point seasons.

On a side note, Redden was placed on waivers today.

If they can get him for just this season, do it. But don’t screw up FA opportunities this summer to sign an old guy like Redden.

I always liked him when he was playing with Chara in Ottawa, but once the big guy left, it really exposed some of Redden’s defensive short comings.  Not to mention he was a train wreck in NY, and he just keeps getting older.  While he’d probably appreciate a short term deal to prove himself before next season, I think I’d take a chance on Campoli before intoducing Redden’s potetial troubles to an already troubled defense.

Lilja is older than Redden.  But he would be a better fit with Smith as the ‘stay-at-home’ guy

Wasn’t Lilja a rock on the PK before he left?

Of course…I have no clue how he was on the Flyers…

I’d love to see Lilja come back.  He definitely fills a void in the defense, grit, and pk categories with little to no offensive aspirations.  He, Kronwall and Z were a devestatingly effective pk unit.

If you are saying you liked him when he and Chara were D partners, you are mistaken. Chara and Redden hardly ever played together 5-on-5. Chara was paired with Phillips during the majority of his time here and Redden had a revolving door (Rachunek, Meszaros, Corvo, etc.)

Not for nothing, but Detroit should sign Redden and Lilja.  Neither guy should cost anything, Kindl sucks, and Detroit has zero dman depth in the system in the event somebody gets hurt… like the guys who have a tendency to get hurt (Coliacovo, Kronwall, White, Quincey… hey, everybody)..

If Detroit could hide Kindl somewhere, great, otherwise cut him.
