Willie Mitchell Gets A Few Things Off His Chest

from Jason Botchford of The White Towel,

Nearly four months since suffering a concussion which has kept him away from hockey, an emotional, red-eyed Willie Mitchell returned to target the NHL and indict chief disciplinarian Colin Campbell for his inconsistency in dealing with head shots.

Mitchell said he was disappointed by Campbell’s decision making. He said a neutral party is needed in Campbell’s role because his “relationships” with teams and players can bias rulings.

“I know Colin Campbell has a lot of relationships with general managers and owners and stuff like that,” Mitchell said. “It’s very tough to hand down decisions on matters like this when you’re friends with people.

“It’s like saying I have to discipline my teammates. It’s too emotional. You can’t always make the right decision.”

Looks like the Vancouver Sun pulled the article.  Link goes to “sorry, story not available”.  Separate Google search yields the same results.

For the record, I’d like it if more players got in on the act of calling out the league’s disciplinary policy.  Nobody knows what’s suspendable anymore and it makes the sport unnecessarily dangerous (yes, there is a necessary element of danger I want left in).

Hopefully, this will get some people to take the sad state of the Players’ Association more seriously.

Thanks for the update, Paul.  Glad to be able to read the whole Mitchell quote.

I completely agree with him, not only that the inconsistency has led to chaos, but that the solution is to have a more neutral party in charge of this role.  I too think that Campbell’s personal relationships with so many people in hockey (and the direction of a league commissioner who doesn’t want star players suspended) has led to this issue.

Mitchell’s absolutely right about everything.

It’s going to take a death on the ice before Colleen Campbell and the NHL actually start making a standard for suspendable infractions.

Right now the Magic 8-ball solution isn’t working.

Maybe with the players (you know the ones really affected by these decisions) finally speaking out this house of cards the NHL calls discipline will come crashing down. What are the odds Brendan Shanahan somehow gets involved in this or is he too bright?

The NHL needs standards and accountability if it is ever going to be taken seriously, not by the curious car wreck watchers that just see the highlights on ESPN, but by the hard core fan that keeps this League afloat.

Mitchell is right all the way, but don’t forget the PAs role in this… their job is to do what’s best for the players, and we haven’t heard much protest from the PA over the way Campbell does (or doesn’t do) his job. The PA as a unit needs to make it very clear that they will not continue to tolerate seeing their players suffer head injuries that, even if they don’t seem problematic in the short-term, have shown to cause serious issues later in life.

I guess NHL has excuse now to get rid of him
