Kukla's Korner Hockey

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Can defenceman Ryan Whitney play in the Edmonton Oilers’ seasonopener this Sunday stone-cold with nary an exhibition game or any game for 285 days?
Could Whitney suit up and just play the power play and feel his way into an NHL game for the first time since popping a tendon in his ankle on Dec. 28, 2010, against the Buffalo Sabres?
Or will the Oilers do the prudent thing and have Whitney play one or two games for their American Hockey League farm team in Oklahoma City, like a rehabilitation assignment for a major-league baseball player. Hall of Famer-to-be Derek Jeter played some games on a New York Yankees’ farm squad this summer when he was coming back from a leg injury. Could Whitney play at least the AHL Barons’ game in Austin, Texas, against the Texas Stars on Oct. 9?
“It’s going to be tough to come back (without any action). For a couple of NHL games, people will be whizzing (by him). If it were up to me, I’d play two games in the minors, but not back-to-back games,” said Whitney.
