Will Luongo Retain The Captaincy In Vancouver?

from Matthew Sekeres of the Globe and Mail,

Canucks general manager Mike Gillis denied an Internet report Tuesday that claimed goaltender Roberto Luongo had been stripped of the C and that centre Henrik Sedin, the NHL’s most valuable player, would take over as captain. Gillis said he had yet to meet with Luongo about the matter, but expects an audience in Vancouver next month, when the goaltender arrives prior to training camp.

After losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs for a second consecutive season last spring, Luongo said he would review his captaincy, particularly its media demands.

Gillis said the organization wanted Luongo to determine whether the captaincy had become a distraction. He added that the team made lots of changes this summer, and wanted to give the goaltender ample opportunity to digest a revamped roster.

I see what you did there Gillis…

“You’re not TECHNICALLY right, we haven’t done it yet.”

At least he’s being classy and letting Bobby play the Maximus Desimus Meridius card and give Rome back to the people, but you know it’s not going down any other way.  It’s coming off.

If Luongo is in fact the captain, you should never take the C away from him or any either capt. The captain of a team is someone that you can look to for inspiration when the team is doing great and when the team is doing terrible. The job of the captain is to remain confident, optimistic and calming.

What type of message do you think it sends to a team who’s captain has just been stripped of the C? Taking away the C sends doubt into the teams psyche.  Even if the captain is struggling, like Luongo is, you should especially not change it.

That just tells the players that the coaching staff will not stand by you when your down. I think giving the c to a goalie is another issue, but he should still never be stripped of that role.

They did in San Jose.  Todd McLellan asked Patrick Marleau to give up his “C” (which he did willingly) and gave it to now-retired Rob Blake.
