Will You Go To A Game?

from Matthew Fisher at Global News,

Even if professional leagues are finally given a green light to resume play this autumn, how many fans will be comfortable having their kids sit cheek by jowl with strangers when there has been and will be much discussion about the likelihood of second and third waves of coronvirus infections?

Beyond that, there is the question of how many fans will be able to shell out $100 or $200 for a good ticket. Millions of Canadians and Americans will still be on the dole this fall. Their top priorities will clearly be food and rent.

Furthermore, corporations, which pay wild prices to entertain clients in luxury sports boxes, will have great difficulty justifying such costs if they manage to survive until the fall. They will be preoccupied with getting fresh financing from beleaguered banks and ways to restart their businesses by recalling employees who are already desperate to start getting a paycheque again.

If there’s no treatment and no vaccine, I can’t imagine a scenario where any sports league will be given a g reen light to start play. It endangers the players and the general public. It pulls medical staff off the front lines, where *every* doctor is needed. It is not wise to try to “get back to normal” before we’re actually ready, no matter how bad things look.

I understand people want to go back to work. They might be getting sick of life at home, feeling stuck in place with nothing to do. But you’ve gotta think rationally. All this nonsense about returning to normalcy sooner rather than later is just that, pure nonsense. If Trump goes ahead with “reopening the country” as he calls it before we have a clear path forward, things are going to get even worse.

I don’t know. How comfortable can it be sitting in arena seats in a hazmat suit?  wink  Not to mention quaffing a few ginger ales or using the restroom.
