from Sarah McLellan of azcentral,
His attention to physicality has created a messy record that includes six incidents that have required supplemental discipline. His latest transgression — a hit on the Chicago Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa in Game 3 of last year’s first-round playoff series — received the stiffest penalty, and now Torres is tasked with revamping his style, once again, to stay in the NHL.
“I can’t afford to go through something like that again,” Torres said. “There are some things that I’m going to have to change if I want to keep playing in this league at a competitive level, so I look forward to it. I know I can bring more to the game than just physical play.”
Torres was assessed a 25-game suspension for a hit to Hossa’s head. After an appeal to the league, Commissioner Gary Bettman set the sentence at 21 games.
Thanks to a lengthy playoff run by the Coyotes, Torres has only eight games left to serve. It’s unlikely the suspension will be further reduced because of a shortened season, but Torres’ status was one of several issues addressed between the league and Players’ Association in the transition rules from the previous collective bargaining agreement to the new one, according to a league source.
