Will Crosby Find His Game?

from Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe,

All eyes will certainly be on Sidney Crosby. Now that LeBron James has rescued the Heat in a Game 7, Crosby is the sports star with the most to prove in the spring of 2013. His reputation has taken a massive hit in the first two games of this series and he risks morphing into a Wilt Chamberlain/A-Rod pinata if he continues to pout and put up zeroes.

The sub-headline in Sports Illustrated’s May 13 cover story on Crosby reads, “You can’t keep Sidney Crosby down. You can only marvel at how hockey’s best player keeps coming back even better than when he left.’’

Well, the Bruins certainly have kept him down for two games. And the only thing to “marvel” about is the new notion that Crosby is a baby and a no-show on the big stage. He’s supposed to be the face of the NHL and the successor to Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, and Mario Lemieux, but thus far in this series, he’s not nearly as good as Torey Krug. And let’s not embarrass him with the numbers about his faceoff failures against Patrice Bergeron.

Jesus Christ they must have cut Chicago and Boston’s sports writers out of the same stuff.

If anyone can make a 2-0 lead disappear in a hurry its Pittsburgh.  Better to save the gloating for when its over Boston.

It’s the wrong question.  Boston is dedicating a lot of energy to neutralize Crosby.  Sometimes that’s the way it goes.  He’s fast, creative, gifted, and absolutely can’t do it alone while the rest of the team is a no show.  Coach Dan needs to reinvent their approach a bit and everyone needs to show up.  Problem is, I don’t know if that will change the dominance of the Krejchi/Horton/Lucic line.

He’s already playing part of his game.  He gets shut down by the opposition and resorts to cheap shots and whining.

The question should be, “Will he find the other part of his game”?

Hope to Helm that he doesn’t because I am thoroughly enjoying this.  Just like I enjoyed his meltdown against Philly last year.  And every time Z shuts him down.

I am thoroughly enjoying this.

I’m intrigued by it but by no means enjoying it.  One only needs to imaging the same bully tactics next year against Pav and Z to have one’s enthusiasm dampened a bit.  If you thougth the Bruins were bullish in Pittsburgh, just wait till they arrive at the friendly confines of the Garden.

MoreShoot no they are using the detroit model from the back to back cup finals keep Sid & Geno under control & make everyone else beat you, Sid BY HIS CHOICE is playing with 2 3rd Line W’ s in Kunitz & Dupuis & Geno has Neal at RW but the Moron coaching staff has Iginla playing out of position at LW

EP.  My point is still valid, though, in that framing this series as “What can Syd do to save the Pens” is just wrong.  If Syd chooses those wingers and it’s not working, then not Syd, but Coach Dan makes a change.  And still everyone else needs to assert themselves.  Why did the Pens win in 09?  Staal and Talbot changed the series, right?

Yep ! Dan is a “Players Coach” and does not want to piss anybody off let alone Sid.

& I agree it isn’t Sid to the rescue ! They need Sid, Kunitz who has been Dogshit most of the Playoffs Dupuis has had a few good moments, Geno is playing with a Screwed up shoulder, Neal has a Sprained Ankle & Iggy is out of Position, Sutter since this is his 1st NHL playoffs is in over his head at the moment & I believe his wrist is injured, Cooke has been there most consistent F, Kennedy was back to the way he was in the Back to Back Finals with RW’s But has slacked off & was scratched last game, Morrow is injured & playing but is running on fumes & the 4th Line is a Black hole

So…. Sid is a hero for CHOOSING to play with two 3rd line wingers but the coach is a moron for putting Iginla at LW. Damn stupid coach, losing the series for them. If only he put Iginla at RW, the the universe would be saved and Sid would defeat Ming the Merciless.

“Sidney Crosby, Center, Pittsburgh Penguins!”

If Sid is playing anywhere by his choice and they’re getting smoked this badly, the coach should be fired and Sid should be reminded he’s not the coach.

What I find most pathetic about all of this kind of discussion is how craven everything becomes to the NHL marketing mind.  I mean, the NHL started getting dollar signs and working on it’s marketing of Syd when he was probably about 15, if not earlier.  Now he is a very fine player, in a league of very fine players.  It’s debatable whether he’s the best player in the league, and even if you subscribe, as I do, to the principle that it’s not enough to be the single best player even if we could fairly decide that, to the NHL he is actually the marketing tool ‘The best player in the league’ or ‘the face of the game’ because the league thinks that this will get more clueless Sues to tune in.  And so when things go against the grain and the Pens, as a team, are getting shoved around unexpectantly, the reaction is not that, gee, it’a a real game out there bigger than just Syd, but an even more obsessed version of ‘What can the best player in the league do now?”  That, IMO, does nothing but dumb down the game.

OCD. Seriously? I hadn’t heard that before. I could see it. That’s the type of guy that will eventually bust under the pressure. The ritual will get bigger and more complex…. soon he’ll be taping his stick counter-clockwise for the 9th time in a row before counting all his shoelaces twice while the puck drops and the announcers wonder why he’s not on the ice or the bench.

it really is a disabling disease as I can attest to my sister ! I feel SO bad for her BUT she won’t get help & just like Alcoholics & Drug addicts they will go when they are sick & tired of being sick & tired

Just My Opinion of course but that is why he insists on having Kunitz & Dupuis as his W’s. Kunitz- Malkin-Neal was arguably best line last season & what happened when Sid came back Immediately he had Kunitz & Dupuis

You think his OCD extends to who is linemates are? Like he’d curl up in a fetal position if he didn’t see Kunitz on the ice with him? Not trying to make light of OCD, it’s bad news, but if the Penguins allow that to interfere with the coach’s ability to, you know, coach, then they’re management needs their heads checked too.

Win as a Team. Lose as a Team. I find it hard to believe that Crosby makes all the calls. He is not the Coach, GM, or Owner. They are all in this together. It would be unfair to hold Crosby accountable for the failure of the entire Team.

Each player needs to get their head in the right place and stop trying to be ” The One” that saves the day. That strategy will not work. Not to mention the 2 senior citizens that were brought in at the deadline. I think it upset the chemistry. They were brought in to help “lead”, but, the Penguins already have a leader.

Too many Captains.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!
