It was a chance for teams to purge themselves of high-priced flab, but when general managers stood on the scales at 5 p.m. ET yesterday, their weight stayed pretty much the same. Toronto, Ottawa, St. Louis and countless others found it safer to do nothing this week, rather than exercise a one-time option to buy out the contracts of their most expensive players. "First of all, I don't think any of us knew what to expect," said New Jersey general manager Lou Lamoriello. "In saying that, when you think about it, I'm not totally surprised because people still have to put teams on the ice. You just can't start buying out players and start all over again.
