Why All The Hate For Vancouver?

from Ed Willes of the Vancouver Province,

It’s all over twitter. It’s the talk of talk radio. We did a Google search of “hate Vancouver Canucks,” on Thursday and got 589,000 results.

I mean you almost expected to pick up the Globe and Mail and read a 64-point header: “Barney the Dinosaur says: ‘I hate the Canucks, too.’ ”

Never mind that Angus Reid published a survey on Thursday in which the Canucks were tied for third (with Ottawa, don’t get us started on Ottawa), behind Toronto and Montreal as the NHL’s most hated Canadian-based franchise.

The idea that the Canucks are the NHL’s most hated team has been repeated so many times it’s now accepted as fact….

We will give you the organization, which sees a sniper behind every grassy knoll, doesn’t help itself. And the Canucks have players — Ryan Kesler, Max Lapierre, Alex Burrows — who’ve earned reputations as divers and chirpers (Note to Kesler: Stop with the theatrics. You’re too good a player and the refs don’t buy it, anyways).

But, geez Louis, every team has at least one diver/chirper/pain-in-the-rear type in its lineup. The difference is not every team wins and, whatever else they are, the Canucks are two-time Presidents’ Trophy winners.

I agree. I’m not particularly a fan of the Canucks but I think this whole “most hated team” thing is completely made up. Every team has dirty players and a diver or two. The media has simply stumbled onto a fairly lame story and is running with it.

For a few years they were no worse than the guppies or penguins with the whining and diving.  But when they started pulling hair, they became the lowest of the low.

I think the hatred is two-fold:

1. It’s not just that they dive and whine and chirp, it’s that, whether right or wrong, the diving and whining and chirping seem institutionalized in Vancouver in a way they aren’t in any other franchise.  The coach whines about being a victim.  The GM holds a press conference in the middle of the playoffs to complain.  And all this from a team that throws around as many cheap shots and dirty plays as anyone, then seems to go down in a stiff breeze and act like the wind should be suspended for 30 games.

2. It works.  Unfortunately the league doesn’t seem terribly interested in cleaning this crap out of the game and it’s starting to spread to a lot of other teams because they see it work.  What’s really sad is that this stuff could be cleaned up in a week and yet the league does nothing.  If it continues to work, and continues to earn them both leeway and power plays, more teams are going to do it and the sport will suffer.

The biggest thing I really have against Vancouver is the presence Sedins.  I have a dislike of any athlete who (before they’re drafted) decide to dictate where or under what circumstances we’ll play.  When they announced “we won’t play if we’re not drafted by the same team” they lost my support.

This is the reason I never cared for Elway, Lindros, or Eli Manning.

They are the fourth most hated team in Canada? Tied for third is the same as saying tied for fourth.
Let’s see. Toronto, Montreal, Ottowa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver.
Who did I miss?
Nobody?

So Vancouver is the fourth most hated team of the 7 in Canada.
That seems to me that’s right in the middle.
So there is average hate against Vancouver.

Back to the idea they whine and cry about everything. (Going to mention they are a little on the dirty side IMO. I see them similar to Boston. Skilled, but with players who play on or beyond the edge on a regular basis.)

Max Lapierre, Alex Burrows are two of the most unlikeable douches/ players in the NHL, add the Sedin Sisters’ and Ryan Keslers diving and it’s not hard to hate them.

These two quotes from you guys add in Roberto “pump my tires” prima donna and it just about covers it. Oh yeah and there is something about a riot. It isn’t even close for most despised team in the NHL.
