The salary cap that came into effect this season restricted some teams' ability to deal, but there were more moves than expected as activity heated before the 3 p.m. ET cutoff. It was clear, too, that defencemen were the most highly prized players. Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa strengthened their lineups, as did Carolina, the New York Rangers and Nashville.
