Who Better To Ask About The Trap Game Than Jacques Lemaire

from Damian Cristodero of Lightning Strikes at the St. Petersburg Times,

Here is what former Devils and Wild coach Jacques Lemaire said about the criticism of Lightning coach Guy Boucher from Versus commentators Mike Milbury, Keith Jones and Pierre McGuire Wednesday night about the team’s 1-3-1 trapping system, which they said makes for such boring hockey the Lightning and Boucher should be embarrassed and even “punished.”

“Myself, I laugh at this,” Lemaire told the St. Petersburg Times in a phone interview. “I laugh at it this because are we supposed to coach as we please the people who are announcing the games or make comments on the games? Is that a new style or what? Do we have to please Milbury when we coach? It’s the first time I hear of this.”

If anyone knows about criticism, it is Lemaire.

Philly should be embarrassed. The coach decides his defensive tactic, now beat it.
In basketball they have the sec over half rule, then teams decide if they want to full court press or not. If there was no 10 sec rule and teams didn’t full court press, would the offensive team just stand there dribbilling? No, they would bring it up and start the attack.

I hate the trap, but it is allowed so play against it and beat it.

And what were they doing but trying to get Tampa out of it by basically daring them to come get them? That’s a strategy too you know. Philly decided there defensive tactic wasn’t going to bang their head against the NZT wall like so many other teams do and commit turnovers leading to odd man counter-attacks.
