Where Will Justin Schultz Land?

from Eric Stephens of the Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

As TSN hockey insider Bob McKenzie posted on his Twitter account earlier this week, the Ducks have until June 24 to sign Schultz as they had 30 days to work out a contract after the 21-year-old filed paperwork to leave the University of Wisconsin. No one has disputed that date.

But the signs are increasing that Schultz won’t sign with the Ducks and is intent on choosing to entertain offers from other teams, which can begin at 5 p.m. ET as McKenzie reported. Any team can officially sign Schultz on July 1, when he can become an unrestricted free agent.

All parties have been tight-lipped about the situation. Ducks GM Bob Murray would only say that “we’re still trying to sign him.”

The fact is Murray hasn’t been able to land the talented blue-liner despite offering the maximum allowable to a player entering his initial NHL contract. Ducks executives have been unable to convince Schultz that Anaheim is the right spot for him after his junior season with the Badgers ended back in March.

It has led to much consternation within the Ducks’ front office, which until the last few weeks has been of strong belief that Schultz wanted to play with the club. The club was ready and willing to burn the first year of a two-year entry level contract as they hoped to play him on the final three-game road trip to western Canada.

Has Justin Schultz ever played beside Brendan Smith in college?  Might interest Brendan to have a collegiate teammate on the Wings…

I sure hope not.

With Stuart also packing his bags and returning to his family, Schultz would be a fit to the Wings D.  Not sure if Holland would back off of his “Seasoning” formality when it comes to prospects on this one.

Really?  So upon losing a #1 d-man (whose loss automatically drops White’s stock a bit) and a #3/4 defensive defenseman you think adding a 100% unproven is a good fit?  Nevermind that we’ve already go an underachieving $3M defenseman and probably will be bringing in a largely unproven Brendan Smith?

It boggles my mind that people think this would be a good idea for Detroit.

His previous D partner was Jake Gardiner, who is the current golden boy of a certain Canadian franchise run by the guy who originally drafted Schultz.  While it would be great to have him (at a sub-$3 million price only) it seems pretty clear at this point the reason he refused to sign in Anaheim is because he has his heart set on a particular team.  As much as Wings fans can pine for a projected-in-the-top-4 Dman, Schultz is going to the Leafs.

So you would prefer we add someone who is already PROVEN crap, Garth?  Cause that’s pretty much what all the other UFA options not named “Suter” are…
