Where The Flyers Stand Before The Draft

from Frank Seravalli of Frequent Flyers,

At the beginning of one of the most crucial weeks of the offseason, Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren held a press conference on Monday to discuss the team’s draft and free agency plans.

Here’s a few quick hits from Monday’s press conference:

—Holmgren laughed and said he “knew nothing” when asked about a rumor circulating over the weekend about Columbus star Rick Nash vetoing a trade to the Flyers. Nash’s name has been linked the Flyers, Rangers, Sharks, Bruins and even Maple Leafs in recent weeks. He’s expected to be dealt before July 1 rolls around.

—Holmgren said it would be unlikely that the Flyers would trade for the rights of any potential free agents before the July 1 free agency season opens.

I could see Nash going to Toronto.  Burkes a baller, he’s not gunshy, Toronto has a lot of good prospects and aren’t exactly happy with all of them.  Have roster players to move.  Honestly makes some of the most sense AND I’m sure Nash would jump at the change for play for the Leaf.  I’d like to see that Shamalan happen

Considering they don’t have the cap room to re-sign their own UFAs (ie. Matt Carle) until July 1st, it would be a waste for them to deal for the rights of any other free agents.
