What’s Wrong With The Senators?

Damien Cox of The Spin with one of ten thoughts,,,

The Sens have lost four out of five, but it's the way they're losing games that a bit shocking.

They're the only team in the NHL that is giving up more shots per game than the Leafs. Last year, with injuries with to Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson, they were the NHL's hardest working team, and among the most miserly when it came to allowing goals. Everyone raved about the impact of Paul Maclean's coaching.

This season, they've gone from the 2nd best defensive team in the league to the 24th. Could Daniel Alfredsson's leadership be missed this much?

I am more worried about the state of the Wings….but hey, we need all the help we can get in the division…

People adjusted to what Maclean was doing, Still a damn good coach that I would take in a second over Bylsma’s Keep doing the same thing over & over

Yeesh, if Alfredsson was so important to keeping Ottawa playing well last year then either he’s lost it or is being completely misused by the Red Wings.

Or maybe, in Detroit’s case, it’s genuinely a case of too many leaders in the room…

The goaltending has gotten very average. Last year they were able to withstand all of the injury issues because they were carried by their netminders.

As well, the Sens D has been really inconsistent. They let Gonchar walk away assuming that Cowen and Wiercioch could step in and fill the void he left. Hasn’t happened.

They also have given up the first goal in almost every game. Doesn’t make it easy to win when you’re playing from behind consistently.

I think that’s a great point Chris.  Their goaltending was incredible last year - good enough for the 48 game schedule.

Ottawa will still be fine.  Detroit will still be fine.  Teams can afford to go on 3, 4, or 5 game skids this early in the season.
