What Should Tim Murray Do With Evander Kane?

from Bucky Gleson of the Buffalo News,

Murray could keep Kane and hope he cleans up his act, but that’s ignoring an unsettling past followed him from Winnipeg to Buffalo. He could trade Kane, but that means getting little in return. Teams aren’t lining up for a $6 million forward who embarrassed two organizations multiple times. They could stuff him in Rochester, but what would that solve?

If they keep him, Buffalo runs the risk of him landing in more trouble, or worse trouble, and further embarrassing the organization. Clearly, the Sabres were conflicted Tuesday after wishing Kane a happy birthday via Twitter, deleting the preset Tweet presumably after followers complained, and posting an edited version.

What are the rules for a company sending along birthday wishes to an employee a day after he was arraigned? I’m not sure, but I’m certain it would have been avoided if Kane didn’t put himself in another precarious position. There’s no telling what the future holds.

Kane-to-Vancouver trade rumors, which had been flying for weeks, sounded like a viable solution. Kane would get an opportunity to play for his hometown team and be surrounded by family and friends. The Canucks would get a good player who would provide a much-needed boost for a team in transition.

The Sabres wouldn’t get full value for Kane in any swap, but there would be benefits to making a deal.

I see all the warnings signs but the thought of getting a 30 goal scorer on the cheap is tough to resist. If the trade had condition clauses based on number of games played, I could deal with that. He’s a brash, immature kid but has a load of talent.

This last incident is by far the most troubling. I think at least half the other incidents were merely press looking for story where there really wasn’t one, they were minor in comparison.

You gotta wonder when Kane is gonna figure out that going out to bars probably isn’t in his best interest right now.  He’s risking his career, millions of dollars and a chance at the Stanley Cup just to party and some bar.  He keeps putting himself in these situations and he keeps getting burned.  Time to clue in and find a different nighttime activity.  No need to be a shut-in or anything like that, but there have to be some other options for entertainment (even in Buffalo).

Pay him his wage and put him on the ice. If someone comes along with a juicy trade offer, make the deal. Business as usual.

I’d suspend him until further notice for actions detrimental to the team.
Granted that never happens, but the general principle of this crap with a person of privilege/celebrity status really rubs me wrong.

Agreed. Especially when he’s out at 3am at a strip club. I know he’s young and entitled to have fun but he should be smarter than that.

If I’m a professional athlete making lots of money, I’m nowhere near a bar/strip club near closing time.

I’m not sure it matters that he’s in a strip club at 3am.  If these allegations are true then they would happen wherever he chooses to socialize, and if they’re not true then it’s the same thing.

I mean OK, if you think he’s completely innocent of all the allegations between Winnipeg and Buffalo then yeah, stop hanging around strip clubs.

But if there’s an iota of truth to these allegations then how about he just stops punching, grabbing and assaulting women (sexually or otherwise) and he wont’ have any f*cking problems?

Hang out wherever you please, Evander, just start showing a little god damn respect for women please.

These allegations show how dense Kane really is.

Meeting young women should be fairly easy for a decent-looking, young, wealthy, in-shape, semi-celebrity dude playing in the NHL.

The fact that he seems to believe public sexual assault is a legitimate way to interact with women should be a hugely worrying, fundamental character issue for any NHL team.

Based on current trends I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the Red Wings.
